Any Bow hunters here????

bow hunting is illegal here in the uk, there may be a few that travel abroad to do it, I have a bow but for targets only.

Bow hunting tends to be a contentious issue on this site, and threads tend to be shut down pretty quickly.
I think a "hunting overseas" section ought to be added to the SD site. It could include the existing big game hunting section, and would provide an appropriate place to discuss hunting methods that are not used in the UK.

you got me thinking,,, why,, a quick look at some archived "bowhunting" threads seem to have been prematurely closed simply because folks started personally insulting and name calling, not just presumably because they were about bowhunting, I'm inclined to agree with you about including in the big game/hunting overseas, bowhunting topics

but that's not my call.

I have 2 bows, a recurve and a compound. I only use them for target practice at the moment but I hope to use the compound on my next trip to Namibia. I really enjoy a few minutes on the weekend practicing. I will only use it hunting when I feel competent
At the moment I can usually get 5 arrows in a 4 inch circle @ 20 yards.

From the little time I have been on this forum, I would also suggest that it's the personal insults etc. that get the thread shut down.

Bow hunting was banned here in DK in 1967 but was re-introduced in 1999 for Roe and smaller game and at the beginning of september this year for the larger deer species. As with all hunting here you have to pass a proficiency test before you are allowed to hunt with a bow and there are strict rules on allowable equipment. I've sometimes thought about getting myself a bow, but I have no interest in bow hunting.

You are correct it is the personal insults that gets the majority of threads closed on this site. We have also banned people too, and will continue to do so if it goes beyond a certain point. However we cannot patrol the site 24/7 so do rely on the members to keep us informed.

I think you have made a valid point about the big game section and will consult with my Co Owners to see what we can do.

Did you join a club or take lessons to find out what size bow/draw weight etc you needed and to learn the art of shooting it?

I have a friend who is an excellent archer so learnt lots from him regarding size and power of bow. But basically I tought myself. Lost lots of arrows . The most important advice I was given was don't get a bow that is too powerful until you learn to shoot.
