Anyone here work in Oil&Gas in Scotland?

Did you try Wood procurement ?
Most platforms actually get someone to collect ignition cartridges during their home leave

Think every company has designated persons who have shotgun licence for the job of relighting the flare stack

As above .... personally on core crew normally has shotgun cert .
Last time seen it done waasa single barrel Cooey.. and lad took box of shells to light it ....
Lot of platforms use basically a beefed version of peizio ignition

Paul.

Bumped into a guy returning the gun to Neil Anderson at Seals Cove a few years ago. If you can track him down he knows the right people

Don’t work in North Sea anymore but I have a Flare ignition users certificate.I did have the industrial firearms on my license. The company that did the course and looked after the guns was INS Aberdeen Ltd

The guns used are just 12 bore single barrel we had baikal but these were swapped out for modified brownings some on fac (under 24”) some on SGC .
If you want anymore details send me a pm

I can still contact one person(owner) who was involved in one of the training outfits if required, PM me.

I was on a rig with twin flare booms.

Rumour had it that the chap with the gun was stood at the wrong flare trying to ignite it whilst crude and gas was ****ing out the other one….

All I know is the rig was covered in crude. Took ages to clean up,

I work offshore, I'm not one of the people they use for lighting the flare but if you have a question that you want me to pass on to the lads that do, drop me a pm.
Oddly, most of the lads they use don't actually shoot 🤔.

I always thought it was flare guns that were used, I was in the oil and gas industry but always on the Ships working alongside the platforms carrying out maintenance etc, If they had to ignite the stack we always got a warning that they were firing the flares and we had to move clear, It's a long time since I worked alongside platforms so maybe times have changed

Normally the operations department either one of the ops team or OIM / Supervisor who does it. A lot of places have built in flare ignition panels, either operated on fuel gas or propane from a bottle. These can be unreliable at best. Hence the reason they have a backup ignition using a flare gun, normally a single barrel Baikal or similar as mentioned and a few boxes of flares in a cabinet. Problem is there no money in this realistically, the Labour goverment has dry bummed the oil and gas sector. Ed Millibands green energy, etc has blocked any new installations. All the oil and gas companies have to try and redevelop existing assets...

Ed,

I use to light the flare on the platform I worked (now retired), the cartridges were a solid slug and fired from a 24” single barrel Greener. All cartridges had to be accounted for, with shots fired and remaining cartridges documented. When cartridge stock was low the offshore HSEA would email the HSE manager onshore who would arrange the purchase and logistics. I think they were purchased from Seals Cove in Aberdeen who also did the flare ignition training, it wasn’t a big number of cartridges, couple of boxes a year. You could try making contact with the HSE departments of the major players, offering your services or Seals Cove.
