Ar-15 style .22lr semi auto rifles

Pack it in

Well why would you want a fully automatic, military style .22 rifle ?
So you could shoot may holes in a door @ 50 paces (well 30 maybe)... ?
Spray a field of fire into the oncoming hordes of zombies .. ?
Get together with a mate and form a cross-fire defensive position to hold back a rabble of rabid rabbits .. ?
Post pictures of yourself on social media brandishing the rifle above your head whilst stripped to the waist with a ripped bandanna around your head .. ?

Aye aye, see the fun police have arrived

Go on then ' why would you want one ?

Would you use one to sneak up on a myriad of balloons and burst then quickly ? ...
Jump out from behind a bale dressed head to foot in DPM, complete with black and green face paint and 'pap, pap, pap, pap, pap, pap, pap, blast off a box of ammo in just a few seconds ? ..
Perhaps you'd sneak around disused farm buildings dressed in urban camouflage and devastate a flock of pigeon ? ..

Cut a large marrow in half ? ..
Carve your initials into a broad oak tree ...

Really, what would you do with one ?
Show it off to your friends or your friends children ? ..
Gloat in front of a Kiwi ? ..
Post pictures of you holding it next to military vehicles ? ..

Erm it might actually be fun to tear through a few boxes of ammo

You planning on stopping being a knob about this anytime soon? :-|;)

I have a Lantac Raven with a 16" barrel, they do a 12" as well. Very accurate and so far not a single misfeed or failure to fire using cci standard ammo which is their recommended diet. I have probably put 800 rounds through it so far so it is still early on compared to some. Be aware there will be a bit of a wait if you want one, mine took 9 months from order, but it will depend when you order in their importation cycle from the states.
My friend has sig 522 which he is very happy with, they are discontinued but are available second hand quite cheap and there are a few unsold new ones around. My mate liked his first one so much he bought a second! The trigger is not quite as nice as mine but still good. My rfd has and runs one as his personal gun as well and seriously rates them. It is a very well built gun, it is a training version of the 552 in 5.56. There are three styles of fore end on them, standard hand guard, quad picatinny and plain cylinder.

Thank you so much for all the info, really helps me out, and I was offered a 522 a while ago really cheap but at the time I never had a slot for it or really wanted one. Sod’s law I guess😂 and to be fair it’s more of a plinking gun that I could use for the odd rabbit and crow because I’ve got an old Sako that’s too nice to leave the cabinet often[emoji2360]
Cheers

You planning on coming up with an answer anytime soon ?
You were the one that said "I wish we could have" .... i've just put forward a bunch of reasons, none of which you have countered (or said No to).
All you have managed to to is called me names ..... :tiphat:

One of the things I do is teach, teaching is really all about asking questions, putting forward an idea and then asking 'why'.

I wish I could have perfect 20/20 vision ... (bet you can think of loads of answers to that)
I wish I had financial freedom ... (and that)

You wish you could have a fully automatic .22 military style rifle ... (so why ?)

Muir says "Why not" and Urx thinks it would be 'Fun to tear through some boxes of ammo'... (both reasons .. :thumb: )

The OP asked if anyone owned a military styled (A15) .22LR and what they thought.
My answer is that I have a bolt action .22lr that I use for shooting rabbits and crows and pigeon off the cattle feed. It's a standard sporting rifle (a CZ as it happens), not an Armalite platform and I can't think of a single logical reason to own such a weapon, I can think of lots of reasons not to have one. Same with having swastikas tattooed on my forehead, or wearing a pink Ra-Ra skirt .....

Perhaps you think the day of reckoning is nigh @Woodsmoke ?
The hordes of have-nots will scavenge outwards from the remains of Edinburgh and Glasgow after the Iranians nuke Faslane (HMNB Clyde) and as they destroy Dundee and funnel up the A90 past Glamis you'll need one to fight them off at Foffarty hill.
An epic battle Woody where you'll win your first Pride In Serving Scotland At Long Last medal.
This could be the turning point where the people realise that Lord Cullen got it all wrong. He should have armed the people (que for rousing cheer and guns held high).

As an offshoot, how much ammunition would you need to hold ?
There'd probably be around 1 Million survivors, maybe 2 ?
The AR is reasonable accurate (we're told) so say a 50% hit rate, a 25% kill rate maybe more realistic ?

8 Million rounds of .22LR ammunition.
80,000 boxes.
@ 480gm each that's 38400kg (42.3 ton)
It'll be pretty bit volume wise too (haven't calculated that).
10 rounds per second = 223 hours

Have I gone to far Woody ?

If so and it's none of the reasons in this thread, why do you 'wish' you could have a full auto .22LR on a military (style) platform ?

All this effort to produce a pointless, pedantic, petulant post in response to a comment made to head an entertaining video. Yes, I think you've gone too far. Way too far . . . .

And you STILL managed to f*ck up your grammar . . .

Anyone on here shoot with a semi auto .22 ar15? If so what have you got and what do you think of it? Getting another .22 on my licence and torn between having a full on black rifle or a decent spec’d ruger 10/22,
Would be just for plinking and fun but wouldn’t mind something half accurate 😂
Cheers,
Tom
Not the sort of weapon to be seen out and about with in Northern Ireland ;)

You should write novels , I suppose being a teacher gives you the right to tell others what they can and can't have , bit like Blair when he insisted on banning handguns . I would suppose that you see no reason to own handguns ! Folks want some things that you wouldn't even consider , does that make it wrong ? Of course there are those to whom all firearms (not weapons) are anathema , stop talking like a prat !

Miki. Seriously. You're talking about shooting people?? What on earth does civilian ownership of a full auto 22 have to do with shooting people? Most people think they are fun to shoot whether is be steel targets, an old pumpkin, or whatever. This kind of entertainment obviously doesn't register with you but there is no reason to be critical of those who would deem it fun. ~Muir

(AR's are more than reasonably accurate, btw. I have several and I don't like inaccurate rifles)

Now don't twist .... I was asking if that scenario was "why" Woody/anyone wished he/she could own a full auto ... what was he reasoning for such a wish .... not suggesting he did (or does, or would contemplate) any of the things I put forward, although he hasn't said 'No' to any of them I feel sure that shooting "hordes of have-nots that scavenge outwards from the remains of Edinburgh and Glasgow after the Iranians nuke Faslane (HMNB Clyde) " is not high on his list :-|

I don't think the Iranians ever will nuke Faslane either although it is targeted on someones list ....

Ok here is a real reason for you
Its entertaing to challenge oneself to shoot as well as is possible with a rifle
Improving marksmanship and. Reducing grouping sizes.
Add to this extra levrls of challnge by forcing the pace of things by trying for accuracy with a high rate of semi auto fire (relative to a lesiurely use of a bolt action) then up the challenge further via burst fire then to full auto and seem if you can retain accuracy and just how much you lose with what rate of fire...just a thought

I'm not a teacher but I do (on occasion) teach and thanks for your support with my grammar although Woody says I f*ck up with that...
I thought it was a bit of a stupid knee-jerk reaction banning handguns after Dunblane, just because 1 missfit killed 16 kids (and their teacher) with a 9mm pistol. To put the record straight, the Snowdrop Petition (calling for the banning of handguns) and the legislation (The Firearms Amendment Act) was all done during a conservative government. Blair simply picked up the ball and ran with it after being elected on a "We will be tough on criminals" agenda), it wasn't his idea.

I have had reason to be issued with a sidearm in the past, but now I don't and I have no problem at all if you @waterford103 (or anyone else) wants one.
But hey-ho, you are as entitled to your opinion as I am mine - cheers :tiphat:

It would be a blessing if someone could invent some sort of side-track button so people who prefer to fight than to answer a question helpfully can easily step outside a thread and get things off their chest there.

If the OP is still interested in suggestions, I'd propose adding Tippman to the list to look at. It's not as Gucci as the Lantac or as economical as the S&W but it is a very reliable, accurate, all-metal rifle with a true AR design at a reasonable price. It wont serve as the basis for a multicalibre system, however, as the lower isn't designed to take a centrefire upper.

Thank you, now that’s one I’ve never heard of but il defiantly look into it now, all metal sounds good as il be keeping it for many years to come and seems like the more quality option, do you have one? And thanks for the advice I really appreciate it

Ok, I’ll bite. What exactly is the difference between an AR platform .22 and a Ruger 10/22 or any other semi-auto .22? By your logic, nobody has any business owning a semi-auto rimfire rifle. By the way, these are firearms, not weapons. We hold firearms licences, not weapon licenses. Are you just hung up on the appearance?

So, a few logical reasons. For a start the AR platform is almost endlessly configurable to the end user with no requirement for a knowledge of gun smithing. So if you don’t get on with a stock, handguard or pistol grip you just change it out in a matter of minutes. It is also an ambidextrous platform.

Optics are easier to mount on picatinny rails, I have three different optical setups that I use on my Sig 522, a red dot, 3-10 magnification scope and night vision. I know where each is mounted on the rail and so I can change them around in minutes and just need to confirm zero. Also, if I want to mount an accessory such as a bipod or IR torch for use with the night vision then they bolt straight on to a picatinny rail.

Another possibility is to have a few seperate uppers, so you could have barrel setups for one lower which would also allow you to keep optics permanently mounted.

Practical shooting is increasing in popularity, it’s not my cup of tea but I’ve tried it and it is enjoyable. It’s not going to be that enjoyable with a bolt action CZ. So let’s not forget that some people shoot for fun and if they want to use an AR style rifle then that is up to them.
