Arran stalker

We where due to arrive on the Arran on Sunday for the BASC stag week 2. I got the call Friday at 15:30 with very sad news off the Stalker thats gone missing. My thoughts go to the family who lost a loved one and rescue teams hard work. RIP!

Had a voice mail from Griff who runs the scheme whilst in the highlands last week, who explained what had occured. My sincere condolences go to the stalkers family, a great shock to them I know.

very sad to hear and an experiance that was nearly repeated last week ,when me and a mate were on our lease in the highlands, he went out at 9 ish in the morning while I had to attend to something else, I finally had a walk out at 2 pm , bumped a couple of animals soaking up the midday sun and then back to caravan on darkness.I passed my mates quad in the forest ,so knew he was still out.
I got back to the caravan and started to make some dinner to greet my mate when he turned up,dinner eaten and no mate, starting to get worried now, I left it to 9 pm then decided to ask the local game keeper for assistance, he did not hestitate, quad out, lamps out and off we go looking at over 5000 acres in total darkness.
we looked at one place he might have tried without sucess then carried on the next where he said he was going later on, when we got there and had a look around I started calling out. in the distance we heard a faint whistle behind us and as I called louder my mate let a shot off to let us know where we was.
30 minutes later we were back at the quad with one knackered, cold, ****ed wet through stalker who is the wrong side of 60, the story was that he had the cross hairs on a very nice stag only to be not offered a shot when the said beast decided to quickly move on has they do,my frustrated mate decided to go and have a look where it went , the time was about 6pm , he carried on only to realise that he was going around in circles and was lost, darkness was falling and he didnt know were to go, as darkness came he done the sensible thing and found a rock ledge to cosy up to for the night, he had no lighter, strobe, torch, survial blacket, gps, compass etc , all that stuff was left on the quad.
when we found him he was no more than 500 yards from the road, but in the darkness had become completly disoriatated .
he his one very lucky man, there is no doubt in my mind that we would have be looking for a body the next morning and I think he realised how close he came to checking out, this is a man with over 30 years of stalking in all terrains, so if it can happen to him then it can happen to anyone.

As the last we saw was a report was to be sent to the Procurator Fiscal in late September, where can we read and understand what happened to this poor stalker, so that we may learn how to better prepare for our own safety? Cheers, K
