First FAC Grant put in on 25th November 2022 for .308

Their website states 24 week minimum wait until they get on contact. We'll see how they get on.

So, I know I'm not supposed to, but I really want to give them a call and chase them.

Only issue is, they've removed all contact options on their site. How in the hell are you meant to contact them for anything now?

Im waiting for a variation that went in 7th Nov.
From what I understand talking to an FEO from a neighbouring county, the move and consolidation to Lewes hasnt improved things, and made a pretty thankless task more difficult. Im sure the guys are doing the best they can, but I'd suspect they will be prioritizing renewals.

There is an option to contact the under "General query", I emailed them today (total waste of time btw).

Also, I waited more than 8 months for my FAC, only after sending a formal complaint they sped up the process. They were not even able to locate the FEO who did my visit, and they was giving them his full name email and phone number...

Sussex Police used to have 14 FEO’s. I understand that they now have 10.
Government cuts to police funding have meant that resources have been reduced in non priority areas.
I wonder if the Coroner’s comments after Plymouth will see better funding for Firearms Licensing, or will the Government just pass a new law?

It would be a bold Chief Constable today, who did not look to 'invest' in their Firearms Licensing Department.

Much needs to be down on a national level, but the current levels of funding - and consequently service, training and delivery cannot be allowed to continue as they have.

On funding:- I also note that the Chief of Police Scotland is 'going early' - he has just been informed there will be a cut of £74 million in funding for them. I wonder it the two issues are connected.

Damn! £74m ‘black hole’ in funding for Police Scotland will lead to severe cuts. I hadn’t read about this so I just Googled it. I don’t know anything about the Polis in Scotland, I met one once, but I couldn’t understand a word he was saying. I imagine that there is a lot of rural policing, so officers need to drive long distances. The rise in fuel costs alone will impact on them, before you cut the budget. Apologies to @Jh1986 for hijacking his post, but I don’t think people on here really understand the impact that cuts to the policing budget have had in recent years.

No bother at all, it's relevant. I can see the impact of cuts in terms of officers on the streets. There are probably more mating pairs of panda then bobbies on the beat.
It's not uncommon for there to be less than 10 officers available for 999 response calls for the entire of East Sussex (I'm not including Brighton & Hove in that). That's about one officer for every 55k people and a single domestic will take three officers to deal so it's not long before there is no one🤦🏻‍♂️

Although Sussex and Surrey FLDs have collaborated they still have very "different" ways of working and all I'd say is that if you resided in Sussex I don't think you'd be waiting nearly as long.

I didn't believe you could ever call 999 and not get an answer, until it happened to my wife a while back. I collapsed, stopped breathing (all fine now). She called 999, and it rang and rang and rang before cutting off. It took her three goes to get an answer. Then got told it'd be around 2.5 hours for an ambulance (by this time I was conscious again).

The country has gone to bits

It will just be new laws. I read somewhere that D&C now have nearly 90 people in firearms licensing which if correct is mind boggling.

My FAC arrived 2 weeks ago…5 months from application….Southern Scotland. FAL West…Dumfries & Galloway were very helpful and informative from start to finish…..even have the mobile number of my FAO. Funding cuts, lack of resources and an increased workload….renewals taking priority!….this is not the fault of the people working in FAL…it’s management..it’s not going to get any better either…my concern is that recent & future events will be used to “tighten” up firearm ownership…..cost of a licence will rocket…and the service will stay the same!
First thing that needs sorted is the med cert..there are horror stories on here!…my doctor, who also shoots, turned my med cert around in 3 days for £10.

I'm in East Sussex, and can't fault them at all with regards to timings and variation times.
I have only ever dealt with 1 FEO. Upon renewal a couple of years back now, I left it a bit late due to having to apply online and the med cert from the GP. I had to store the guns at my local RFD but was pleasantly surprised at the quick turn around of renewal + removal of a firearm + a variation for a 308.
GP didn't charge me at all for their part, and even sent the form direct to the police for me 👍

Looks like it's progressing.

One of my referees called me yesterday. FEO called them and was discussing my request for .308 on first application. He said the FEO sounded VERY hesitant to grant something "that big" on first grant. Looks like I'll have a fight on my hands when they do turn up.

With copper basically the defacto standard now, .308 makes an awful lot of sense.

"That big"...I cannot understand how arbitrary the decision making process is.
I was authorised .223, .308 and .303 as I had the justification of historic and long range shooting

I’m surprised they discussed it! your referee is there as a character reference…not give subjective opinions on your specific application.

I did think the same but if they were to ask anyone other than me, then he was the one to ask. Grown up shooting with him all my life. Apparently there's now a question though, over whether or not he is admissable as a referee as he's a cousin.

I made checks beforehand and the answer I got every time was, a cousin is not "immediate family" and so fine. Not exactly an issue as I've plenty of people I can use, but figured he was best as has full knowledge of my experience and ability
