Astigmatism - red-dot/holographic sight options

Hi

If astigmatism causes 'flaring' of the red-dot in reflex type optics - what alternative options are there that provide a 'neat' point of aim?

Holographic sights won't flare with an astigmatism, the two main choices are Vortex UH-1 gen 2 and all Eotech holographic sights, there a few models and reticles avaliable. Have a look at reviews of both.
Depending on how bad it is for you it maybe worth looking through an Aimpoint red dot. They seem to have less smear than most, but it is down to what you personally see through it.

I have an astigmatism in my left eye. The red dot does flare very noticeably and make it unpleasant to use.
A green dot however is much more user friendly, only the smallest amount of flare and it doesn’t affect my shooting, try before you buy.

That’s not always the case.

My reading glasses do resolve that issue but leave me unable to focus around me. Distance glasses diminish the effect, not sufficient to resolve the issue Contacts, (I’ve just spent 6 weeks trying in an effort to resolve this issue). Still don’t work well enough for me.
I suppose I could buy a pair of outsized lens glasses that would allow for no distortion in the upper quartile of the lens - for a considerable price of course. I’ve chosen not to tread that path.

Have you spoken to an Opticians about the issue? I'm amazed contacts or distance glasses don't fix it. Have they said that it's the astigmatism that's the problem ?

I'm not surprised that you can't shoot in reading glasses- unless you're squeezing blackheads in the mirror rather than the trigger.....

Do you normally wear glasses ?

I have the same issue, but I don't like shooting with glasses, so I opted for contact lens's, and just buy the "one day" disposables, perfect !

Even one day disposable lenses don’t resolve the issue on a dot type reticle.

I have found a cross works far better. The reticles in Schmidt and bender PM2’s and Minox ZP5 don’t flare for me. Also the holo sights that project the reticle are far better than the houses red dots. This has reminded me I need to sell my holosun due to this issue.

Whilst I can only report on what my issues are and what does or doesn’t work.
I have spent 4 hours worth of appointments in my local Spec Savers. They have been helpful, willing and very accommodating. I’ve still not been able to find a suitable solution for me.
You mileage May of course vary.

Have you tried a proper Optometrists not just Specsavers ?

No, and to be honest, I’m not going too. Maybe next year, I’ve had just about as much as I can handle trying this so far 😳

Had same problem with red dot so tried a green as heard it can be better, but pretty much the same , so went for broke (literally) and got a 3x magnifier sit behind. Works great, dot on lowest visible power is ok for close range then flip it over for sharp pin dot, really tempted move it over to the deer rifle as ranges I operate over would work really well.

Hi,
Been looking at those makes….so many to choose from that look similar!
Which model did you buy?
Does it work with nv?
Thanking you, Ken.

Hi Ken , I went for the holosun he403c- gr, there was a sale on so this model was only 20£ more then the standard red dot, but this has green dot, solar charging and the best thing ever "shake to wake" slightest movement and it's on instantly and goes off after 10mins if no movement detected .
It does have two NV settings , but I've struggled to get head position with it , possibly because I've got a old Yukon gen1 monuclar headmounted which is pretty long and tiny viewing screen. I went with the holosun 3x maginfer. I also got originally a delta mini dot 11 to mount offset on a scope but the holosun beats it , just the shake to wake is worth it alone👍
