ATA shotgun safety catch issue

Happy boxing day all,
I wonder whether there any ATA owners out there could give me their thoughts on an issue I’m having with my relatively new sporter over and under.

The barrel selector switch doubles as a safety switch. Slide at one side at fires bottom, barrel, first, slide it to the other side at fires top barrel first and sliding it forwards and backwards. Turns the safety on and off. The issue I’m having is that this mechanism is very slack and sloppy. When carrying the shotgun, it is prone to drifting halfway between the top barrel and the bottom barrel positions. Then when you go to slide it forward to take a shot because it is in neither position it won’t go forwards. By the time you reposition your hand and sort the issue out you have missed the opportunity for a shot! This probably happens 10% of the time and I have now missed quite a few opportunities in this way.

Anybody experiencing the same? Does anyone know how to resolve this? I intend to pop into Sportsman Gun Centre in Exeter for them to have a look at it tomorrow, but just wanted to get your thoughts beforehand.

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

No ATA owners out there? It would be a good starting point to hear whether other people experience the same or whether yours are fine.

Needs looking at should not be sloppy, they way it functions is typical of all over and unders i have shot. but not floppy.

If it's not fit for purpose, and still in warranty etc , then take it back to wherever you bought it from , it's a safety catch, it needs to be reliable. If you bought it 2nd hand privately then you're only option is a gunsmith. You'll get it sorted I'm sure.

These I believe use a “gate” on the barrel selector as do other makes, I had to have the mechanism etc on my Yildiz polished for the same reason, once done by a GUNSMITH it totally sorted the issue.

I believe it'll be a spring gone in it, as I had a similar sounding issue on my B525. Easy 10 min fix for a smith with the right parts.

Other symptom noticed, I was getting light strikes on the top barrel, because effectively the safety catch was not being fully/reliably disengaged.

A proper gunsmith will have that remedied in jig time.

Taking it to a gunseller, on the other hand, will lead to a long protracted headache.

Thank you gents, very helpful insight here. Much appreciated. I took the gun into Sportsman Gun Centre. Unfortunately, the Smith was tied up on a welding job at the time. I couldn’t leave the gun with them, as I was driving up country with a bit of wildfowling planned!

Sportsman gun centre have gave me a small replacement spring, which will apparently be stronger than the one already in the gun, I might have a quick look inside myself, but more than likely I will RFD it back to them as they have agreed to do the job for no charge under warranty. Hopefully this will improve if not solve the issue.

I will report back as usual, although it may be a few weeks Until I managed to get the RFD transfer sorted

Just a final update on this one. Sportsman Gun Centre replaced a little spring free of charge and sent it back to my RFD at no cost. They took about a week to turn it around and it is now vastly improved. Hats off to them. they have done a good job again here. Cheers
