Bankruptcy!

Of course on the bright side, in the Address of the Committee to the Communist League in London in 1850 Marx himself said that "The whole proletariat must be armed at once with muskets, rifles, cannon and ammunition".

Sadly Comrade Corbyn somehow missed this out from the manifesto.

:D Dom, Funny , but I still wouldn't vote for them.

At some point the worlds largest employer (NHS) will reach the point where demand is beyond the ability to supply, some would say we are already at or beyond that point.

A future government will, in my view, have to open the extremely unpopular pandoras box around limiting the scope of what the NHS does and defining how the services it no longer provides will be provided ie folk pay for minor/ non essentials themselves - treatments are self funded directly or on insured basis.

I already self fund my own back treatment , it costs around £ 35 a session. I used to go to the NHS but after being given the run around by clueless NHS practitioners and having spent around 2 years in constant pain and varying degrees of disability I finally did what I should have done to start with, pay to see a competent private physio who accurately diagnosed the problem within 10 minutes.

Incidentally, during a discussion with Karen Baker who has recently left as CEO of the "in special measures IW NHS trust" I asked her why I was not receiving the treatment according to my clinical needs that I was entitled to. Her response..."being put on a waiting list is receiving treatment according to your clinical needs".

This to me epitomises what is wrong with the NHS, it is poorly led and wastes resources on irrelevant interventions and perhaps above all else they are so focussed on Govt. targets and protocols that the patients have it would appear become of secondary importance.

What is wrong with asking those who earn four times above national average wage to contribute a bit more?

Nothing wrong with that at all - that is why it already happens; earn £20,000pa and at 20% you pay £4000.00
earn £80,000pa, and at 20% you pay £16,000 - yes I know that is a bit simplistic.........

To address your other concern(s) - the law says parents have to send their kids to school, or they can be fined or
imprisoned - after that, why not have people pay for education and training? If somebody has drive and ambition,
that is exactly what they will do, it is what I have done.

People have to start taking responsibility for their decisions in life

Not a truer word said.

Wholly agree with this! Its a shame that there are whole swatches of people who feel entitled to a house/career/national services etc when in reality they have don't sweet FA to warrant it.

Not sure I share your vision of what a civilised society looks like.

Although draconian, I can’t understand why if someone makes a decisions to have sex, then unprotected sex, then not to have an abortion, then not to give the child up for adoption it’s the states responsibility to pay for those decisions.

People have to start taking responsibility for their decisions in life.
I second the motion.

I'm interested - what's your vision of a civilised society?

One where it is not "all about me" and "what's in it for me", one which willingly protects the weakest member of that society, one that gives equal opportunity for success regardless of social status at birth, one that is tolerant of difference and seeks moderate views not extremism.

There are "Weak" members of society, and then there are also "User" & "Chancers", it remains to be seen how many there are in each category, I see loads where we live that are in the "User" cat.

One where it is not "all about me" and "what's in it for me", one which willingly protects the weakest member of that society, one that gives equal opportunity for success regardless of social status at birth, one that is tolerant of difference and seeks moderate views not extremism.

Did you dream up that whilst smoking a peace pipe what a load of hippy BS. There is no true altruism in the world so why bother trying to achieve it. The only way to have an equitable society its where everyone is treated equal and fights/works for their own best interests. What you get out is directly proportional to what you put in. Why should I pay for members of society when you get diminishing returns from it. just doesn't make sense when I could spend said money in private healthcare/shops/bars/online and create actual jobs for these people rather than state sponsored robbery.

Well said, that's my idea of the society I want to live in.

In this day and age the class system is dead, many of the most successful businessmen today have come from very humble backgrounds, the fact that unlike many of their peers they worked incredibly hard took chances and reaped the rewards should be applauded.

Is there such a place?? I can't think of any society anywhere that works like that, more's the pity.

Such ideals are great (though I might have added "ending world hunger, bringing peace to the Middle East and reversing Climate Change" ;)) but it relies on the fact that all of the individuals in such a society share them. Human nature sadly means that is not, and is unlikely to be, the case.

So in the same way as we have those who contribute a lot, so we seem to have ended up in a society where some apparently expect everything for nothing. And when a product or service has no value, it is treated accordingly. Hence why we see people making appointments at their GP's and then not turning up, to the frustration and detriment of us all. Would your society punish them, or willingly accept the waste of resources?

And whilst of course we should look after the vulnerable and weak, what does your society do about those who figure that there's no point going out and usefully contributing to society when it will pay them to sit around and do nothing instead?

I didn't chose the job. they did

Personally, I did everything in my power to talk her out of it. She had A* inlaw and could be earning a fortune.

And it’s totally unfair to say they knew what they was getting into

With the Brexit vote she’s lost all EU funding for her PHD and with the conservative’smassive cuts to healthcare in preparation for privatization she has lost allfunding for the placement work

This is two years after starting the training.

Amazingly (to me as I am not one of them) there are still people out there who care more about other people than they do about money.

At 18 I was a junior shop steward and member of the labor party because I too believed in a farer society. But people like you kicked all that nonsense out of me long ago and I now realize it’s a dog eat dog world.

I sincerely hope my eldest will realize her mistake and take her skills to a country like the USA where she can easily earn a seven-figure salary.

I think she will meet a lot of people as ungreatfull as you in the next few years and begin to realise her loyalty and compassion are wasted on them

A PHD had nothing to do with being a nurse. PhDs shouldnt be funded by the tax payer. If you want a ohad then it should be industry funded by a sponsor or you find it yourself.

I also know plenty of trianee nurses.....non of whom work for free. Poor career/life choices shouldn't expect funding from the public purse.

I realise that it's a term of endearment but calling Mrs May, Mother Theresa is an insult to one of the greatest women of the 20th Century. The real Mother Theresa worked with the poor and destitute in the slums. Forgave all her personal wealth to help those less fortunate. Mrs May however does little of this. She lives in the lap of luxury in the SE, pulls a huge salary, refuses to be seen publically and if her trip to the south west recently is anything to go by, does not want to mix with the rank and file of this country.
How can we trust a leader who will not defend her political position on television but prefers to debate about who takes the f****g bins out!
When she is willing to take part in a televised debate on her policies she will gain some respect until then let's drop the Mother Theresa c**p because a saint she is not.

Far too PC,PC for my tender ears!!!

:old:

Assuming that there is now a difference in the ultimate goals of the individual parties is a very dated idea

The fundamental issues in this country are:
the fear of losing Global businesses,
the obsession with class,
the historical tax rates

Businesses continue to stay in the UK as it is a Central Timezone and English speaking
If you don't tax them for being here then there is no point them staying
Vodafone, HP, Amazon, eBay, Starbucks, etc etc
Barclays, HSBC, RBS, I could go on
If they all paid their share of the corporation tax for this year only all at once we would be out of deficit overnight

Stop assuming your choice of party is aligned with some brainwashed idea that this party is better for me as I am a shop steward.
Every party that has ever been in power has screwed someone, and not restricted to a particular grade of worker, homeowner, landowner, business owner.
Labour screwed up as much as the Conservatives did before them
Selling off the UK Gold reserves at a 25 year low price point....genius
mishandling numerous financial debacles, Equitable Life, RBS, Northern Rock....
Just because your Dad voted Labour/Conservative doesn't mean you should

Income tax rates screw low paid people
when you are earning £120 an extra 5p in the pound on earnings over the £100, 120 or 150k mark doesn't bother you!
You already have a deficit each month and can save money.
You can afford a decent accountant who will not only pay for themselves but save you more
Income tax rate thresholds are stuck in the 1980s
Free up the thresholds and tax the upper end, Economists the world over will tell you increasing high rate tax brackets and corporation tax INCREASES taxable income.

As are Council tax rates

Take Edinburgh for example:
