Barbour once had a very good full spread advertisement in a popular upmarket country lifestyle magazine that consisted of a photo of a large and very varied assortment of items that they'd found in the pockets of coats returned to them for repair and/or reproofing. It provided a very interesting snapshot of the types of people that wear their garments.
There was a considerable quantity of live ammunition among the collection!
Apparent everything got carefully replaced in the correct coats before they were returned to their owners.

Sold my Longshoreman smock on here for £260, he wrote to me this year with I know its been years since i replied, I have been wearing the jacket on and off since it arrived, absolutely love it still. 09.01.2026

They used to make them in our village in the borders. My mum worked there until they shut it all down and moved to China. I wouldn’t buy a thing from them nowadays.
When did they move production to China I thought their main production was South Shields but also some Portugal, I have friends who used to work in the Factory in South Shields until recently and they were still making them there

Still use my Belstaff Countyman wax jacket for very wet days beating as the water runs off. My Musto gortex gets to heavy

First one I had was a Gamefair - recall this was a lighter weight one, then I got a Solway Zipper which was a heavier weight. Big issues were they go rigid when cold & wet & the sleeves are too short! Sent mine back for a repair & reproof & got them to extend the sleeves too. No idea where it is now, probably hung up in the loft. I went over to the dark side some years ago & bought a Berwick(?) Endurance & by ‘eck it’s the best Barbour I’ve ever had! Also had a couple of Westmorland waistcoats too that I used when I was picking up, rate them very highly too 👍

Apparently, most of it is actually made in Eastern Europe and not China. They only make certain lines in South Shields now. I suppose it would be everything that was made in the borders factories that went to Eastern Europe?

There used to be a glass display case in the main shop in shields with all sorts of oddments in it
A good few live rounds .22 243 of 270 small pen knives whistles sweets
Glass case gone now 🤷‍♂️

I loved my solway zipper back in the day. Used it for wildfowling, rough shooting and even in the winter months coupled with the liner it served me as a motorcycle jacket. I haven't looked at barbour for a few years now but found they didn't have a great choice of jackets with a belt. I did treat myself to a barbour international which is lovely jacket but not a solway zipper... Real shame they stopped producing the solway. I found cheaper wax jackets would cause me to sweat unlike a barbour.

Newcastleton? My wife is from there.

I have 2 classic Northumbria heavy proof jackets.

First one bought when graduating from university land agent course, (practically part of the required uniform 🤣). out grown it but has lasted 20+ years (made in England label).

Second one I bought last winter for rough shooting (no made in England label/ must be china)- will see how its lasts.

Interestingly I paid about the same price for both over 20 years! which tells its own story!

I remember that, also in late 1980's to early 1990,s Midland Game fair at Weston park , Barbour had their own stand, a marquee with 20 + women with sewing machines doing while u wait repairs and re - waxing, they did that for several years.

Got an old Barbour the longshore man made it on to the clothes show back in the 80s
Put it in to have the sleeves lengthend was advised not to have owt dun to it due to its age was one of the very early Barbour jackets god knows how old it is 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Now that is strange… after some years of hard wearing I noticed the sleeves had shortened, just a little but I sent it to Barbour who made an excellent job of lengthening them… the coat is no longer needed so if anyone is interested dm me.
