Best to take to much ammo and bring it home than not take enough and need it as the closest gun shop is on the mainland I shot 11 hinds myself last season.
Simple test to prove you can hit a 4” circle at 200m with the ammunition you will be using up on the hill and that you can make the necessary ballistic adjustment. Simples

Trust me, Chris does and the placement of the 200m gong is in a very good protected location off to the right of the normal rangeYou understand the ricochet risk?

The gong is surrounded three sides by high peat banks ricochet risks are minimalSo long as you can see it, the risk is there with monolithic bullets.
I've never seen that they place a limit at 200M max range before? The zero Target is now a 3” target and not a 4” as mentioned previously.
You have to put three shots inside the 3” target at 100 meters two shots into the kill zone of the deer and if you want to you can shoot the gong at 200 meters if you’re confident
If you do not shoot the gong or hit it you are limited to shots no further than 150 meters if you hit the gong you can shoot out to 200 if you have the equipment and ability to take safe humane shots at that distance
no I don’t think there’s a max limit unless you can’t hit the gong at 200 or have chosen not to then it’s 150 max shooting above 200 is down to the ability of the stalkers and you should know your own abilities I know I’ve shot plenty at 250 on Arran.I've never seen that they place a limit at 200M max range before?
Is this a highly recommended range and push further at your own risk, or a hard and fast rule?
I only ask as from what I've seen of the ground I can imagine a 250+m shot may not be commonly out of the question, which with appropriate equipment and training under the correct environmental conditions isn't a huge stretch on a red?

Nobody actually checks your ranges you are shooting at but you should shoot within your capabilities if you won’t shoot a six inch gone at 200 meters why should you be shooting at deer beyond that but neither of the coordinators are stupid and can probably tell where you have taken a shot from. How do the 'powers' that be check the range you are shooting at once on your beat?
Genuinely interested since it sound like you have 14 stalkers in seven areas with two guys coordinating it all. Excellent shoot management if that's the case, and absolutely no disrespect intended to the two guys coordinating it.
By the way anyone know why weeks 4 and 5 on the hinds are £100 more expensive than the previous three weeks, asking for a friend![]()
^^^^ This, although I got fed up of trying to dry supposedly waterproof boots out over night and 2 years ago resulted in stalking in wellies (Harkila zipped Orton with Vibram sole) with Swazi gaiter tops on them (spookily, look what Chris and Bob both wearSealskinz Socks still get wet... take two pairs of boots and a boot drier
If you are not careful & use a stalking stick of some sort, you can end up waist deep in the hags, as they are not always obvious.^^^^ This, although I got fed up of trying to dry supposedly waterproof boots out over night and 2 years ago resulted in stalking in wellies (Harkila zipped Orton with Vibram sole) with Swazi gaiter tops on them (spookily, look what Chris and Bob both wear).
Since then, I have never had wet feet! All of those lovely looking rides on the satellite photos are usually bogs and candidly, rarely a day on the hill goes by without you sinking up to your thighs somewhere, even on clearfell and on the slopes! Then, if the ground water doesn't get you, that from the sky will. Think wet and then double it - that's Arran![]()
oh I've done this a few times, don't panic just rock backwards and forwards whilst turning the air blue and you'll be fineIf you are not careful & use a stalking stick of some sort, you can end up waist deep in the hags, as they are not always obvious.
Use a Morakniva Companion - it’s all you needWhat knife are you using my friend has just had a email they have to be stainless blades non porous handle and plastic sheath
After getting Shedog two years on the trot I bought a .300 win mag, and got Shedog again next time too.Shedog?
