Basc voluntary lead ban

Waitrose refusing to but game shot with lead, the writing was on the wall.

Lead was banned in paint years ago, as a teenager we lost 3 cows that licked a freshly painted gate - modern paints seem to do a good job.

We banned lead in petrol, all those classic cars would be off the road - they adapted.

Shooting will adapt, a 5 year time scale will provide certainity for those developing new products of a market.

This was alas going to happen, in taking a lead (sic) we have the moral high ground.

Save your pennies. Don't join or renew your subscription to any shooting organisation. Then when it all grinds to a shuddering halt, you will have the money to go out and buy a set of golf clubs....
I bet you giggled when you posted that!

One of my friends is going to grow 50 acres of peas on the fen this year. The pigeons will have a field day. On peat fen peas would grow to about 5 feet tall but fall over long before that is reached.

The merchant has already told him that no lead shot can be used to control pigeons and any found would have severe repercussions on his income.

Evidently the processors can remove steel shot with magnets but clearly not lead.

I have been asked if I will control the pigeons, which could get expensive. The good news is my friend will be buying the steel shot cartridges. :thumb:
At least he can reclaim the vat.

Fortunately my Browning Fusion self loader is proofed for steel. It would have been the kiss of death for my lovely 1920 English SLE that I sold about three years ago.

Looks like the writing is on the wall for lead, no matter which way one wishes to look at the issue.

No falconers there then?

Oh well happy days then

The orgs claiming new technology are not being honest as reading on PW the wads eley are using were in use back in 2013 Is this just a poor attempt at trying to win over defra and the impact of releasing game birds on the environment?
Youtube link for the wads in use in March 2013 by Spanish cartridge maker Armusa.

Not wholly true. Not only are there additives but there is also an EU concession that allows still, today, leaded 4-star, in 2020 to allowed to be sold under licence. Specifically for classic cars. Of which there are two such garages indeed in Leicestershire.

A year or so ago my daughter pregnant with her first child, on NHS advice, refused to eat lead shot game/venison which I agreed with.
Lead is toxic, no doubt about that. How does it become non toxic after it has been through a firearm?
I eat lead shot meat two to three times a week, I would love to remove lead from my diet!

Whilst steel is not ideal and the alternatives are prohibitively expensive change has to come?

There is no doubt that lead is toxic. However, that is a world of difference away from being able to state that lead shot has ever harmed anybody. There has never been a single documented case of anybody having suffered any adverse health outcome from eating lead-shot meat. That is why lead shot is currently legal.

Alternatives are limited by the laws of physics and the reality that substances of comparable density are generally far more expensive and scarce. This is not an issue of technology whereby over time the price of something is going to decrease. Anyone who thinks that lead alternatives will get cheaper is on a different planet. There is no scientific reason at all why change ought to come. It's mere superstition.
