Basc voluntary lead ban

Further copper issues at local High School

It looks as though if you have acidic ground then you’ll likely have copper being dissolved into the ground water and accumulating in other organisms.

To be honest I don’t know which is worst lead or copper :-|

This is getting hilarious.
2025: I can just see the special “Lead and Log” unit going around with balaclavas on, in their armoured riot van, busting the green log smuggling cartels and underground lead shot production plants....
“FREEZE MUTHAPHUCKA!!! Put the log down!
Get down on the ground with your hands behind your head!......where did you hide the lead??.... don’t make me rip up your floorboards!”

And they’re gonna play this in their truck:

Sheep are incredibly vulnerable to copper toxicity. Usually through the wrong feeds or concentrates being used. I wonder whether copper shot would affect them if ingested?
Might be quite handy here then. Our pasture is so low in copper that we have to dose our sheep with the stuff, or put copper boluses / pellets in their rumens.

One of our larger clients has a number of rural properties and farms, some of which are supplied from boreholes or spring/collected water sources. We have a rolling program of renewal and replacement of the internal potable copper water supply pipe work in some of them due to to the propensity of the water to eat the copper.

A good indicator as to when it’s time to address the issue before a major leak occurs is when the tenant complains that their hair is starting to turn green or blue after washing. ;)

Same here, and very thorough it is too, excellent FAQ section with links to sources of evidence. I'll be honest here: if there was an available standard performance 16 bore load with a biodegradable wad and ideally a paper case, I'd be using it already. I switched to paper cases for lead a couple of years ago, and haven't tried steel in by Brno 12 bore because of the wads. If I were to return to regularly shooting at wildfowl though, it would make sense to buy a steel-proofed gun. There was an article in ST recently about a guy who bought an AYA number 4 for £150, had it prepared for steel proof, proofed for steel (it passed), and he was ready to go. There's an element of risk involved though. If my Brno blows up, then it will be a shame, but it will just have died of old age... I wouldn't risk it with my drilling. I'm sure it's up to it, but I don't want to touch the chokes in case it affects the rifle, and I can't replace it. So probably need a stockpile of 16 bore bismuth. In paper cases.

Hmm Am somewhat fed up I have to say

My H&H Royal will soon be worthless along with the Greener etc
Not sure my Hollis .500 double rifle or 2 Ron Wharton rifles will react well to non lead ammunition
My Ivory Netsuke collection, Okimono, Handled set of knives by Harry Bowden were rendered worthless by the Ivory sale ban - along with a few sets of Hippo Ivory I have
The pending trophy ban will no doubt render my not inconsiderable collection worthless
And I was looking forward to taking my, by then, 3 year old grandson on and Easter Egg hunt in 2021

I'll give you £12 for the H&H, so long as you throw in a few slabs of cartridges.

'Fed up' is one way to put it. Even Riddick's antics can't cheer me up at the moment (usually my go-to tonic in times of extreme hunter-persecution-syndrome)...

I am struggling to continue to find a reason to carry on paying for my basc membership as I am finding it difficult to believe a word of what they now say, u turn because of new technology really that technology was available in 2013 but not being marketed by their cartridge partner. And only last week they were supporting the continued use of lead yet within 24hrs that all changed with only PR bull s..t as an explanation. Sorry basc you have lost your way.

What's going too go next.are the bullet heads iv got in the gun room going too be band .I only shoot steel targets and vermin...surely not.

Just for info you understand - not much - lead - no problem

The lethal dose of copper in an untreated adult is approximately about 10–20 g. Cu toxicity is typically marked by the development of liver cirrhosis with episodes of hemolysis and damage to renal tubules, brain, and other organs.

Best not to eat game shot with copper -I wonder what it does in a 'raw' state to wildlife ?

Does it not kill trees or is that a myth?

Copper is quoted as killing trees but usually in the form of nails driven in to the tree - I have no comparison with lead nails, since they are, at best, floppy.

And have you thought any classic rifle with a flip up moon sight, usually made of warthog ivory as it doesn’t yellow like elephant ivory, is now worthless?

I think most offs on here have been crying it for basc ( and other orgs) to grow a big set of based and lead from the front.
The 1 f***ing time they do they don't just lead us down the garden path, more like the slaughter house chase.

WJ only need a sniff off a target to cause turmoil, our orgs have just put a massive bullseye on lead shot.
After the LAG/John Swift debacle I thought we had put lead shot to bed for the near future

Is there a reason for the timing??
As far as I know there is no new scientific evidence so surely NO change???

They have made some big pledges about single use plastics, like others have said is the technology really there.
In basc's statement they mention how quick the technology has came on recently but surely it would off been better to hold off and wait till the technology is already there and getting cheaper and proved itself.

A lot has been said about leads toxicity despite people eating it for hundreds off years with no know ill effect.
Does anyone truely know wot steel shot will do in the body over the long term? Or any of the various other shot choices??
We've already heard not great on teeth.
Will it start to rust? I know they were also worries about MRI scanners, althou I think widely rubbished

Steel inside people going for an MRI is a big no no!
I’ve been through about 5 scans and each time I’ve been asked - is there any steel inside me that I know of?
At one stage there was a bright mass on an X-Ray and the docs weren’t keen to do the MRI until the mass was properly identified as not being metallic!
So if you accidentally ingest some steel shot it becomes a hospital problem.

Least-said-soonest-mended on that one. 'White polymer' is what one used.

I currently have a lovely (63lbs & 62lbs) set of Moz ivory sitting in SA that I can't bring home, along with a load of hippo ivory languishing in Beira for similar reasons.

This country is fooked.
