BASC Wild Boar Course

There are plenty of people who have little knowledge of field sports and its sometimes difficult for those of us who have been brought up in the country side or have a close connection with it to understand how they are supposed to pick up knowledge. After 50 years of stalking and other shooting I'll still do a course if I think it will improve my a about the subject. I have boar on my ground and I know where to find info on boar but I would still do a course if I thought it would be useful.

I had the benefit of being a country boy taught by his grandfather from the age of 10 and being paid per rabbit for everything taken on the small holding, I preferred action shooting sports and still compete internationally, but when in France, Germany, Poland, Denmark, Hungary etc. no reason why you can't stay on for the game as many competition shooters in these places also hunt.

If you want to expand your knowledge of boar going on a course then that is no bad thing. How long though before its a must have in the UK to be able to shoot boar or get boar added to you FAC? Thats where I would have a problem with it.
I'm sure BASC will act in our very best interest (as they have in the banning of the use of lead shot!!) and convince the Powers that be that it should be mandatory to have a nice metal badge or........ two following a wild boar shooting course!!!!

Just a thought

I was a member of WAGBI and later BASC for 35 years and if I was still in the UK I would be less than happy with their performance. I would look at courses like Dsc 1-2 or the boar course for expanding my Knowledge of the subject not as a qualification. I'm sure there are plenty who have done said courses but have very little experience of stalking deer or shooting boar. You can't beat in the field experience
African hunting is something I know little more than zero about. There was a course on dangerous game shooting advertised here on SD run by those who have great knowledge of African hunting. I understand it was a great course and if I lived in the UK I would have signed up for it even though I have no interest in hunting in Africa. I would have given me a insight into the subject that I know nothing about and I'm sure it was great fun as well.
If the powers that be want a mandatory test then it has to be a official UK hunting exam. There's been talk about this for as long as I can remember.

The hazard that we risk by not coming up with an acceptable hunting exam of our own is that parliament will impose one on us that has been drafted by WJ & the GCN.

It cannot be a full value Boar course for me without the running target element, L1 L2 DSC already covers static target shot placements, As for being able to tell the difference between a Frischling / Uberlaufer / Keiler etc ..... & The importance of knowing what a Matriarch looks like & her position in the sounder.

One thing which seems pretty obvious to me the aiming points are different with deer and pigs. Certainly are between antelope and warthogs.

David.

Best Practice is not to shoot at moving boar in the UK . The situation here on following up wounded boar is very different to on the continent, there is no right of entry onto others land to dispatch a dangerously injured boar. The identification slides require determining both the gender of the boar and whether it is juvenile or mature.

Yes, on the day once all the assessments & shooting tests were completed. Certificate took something like 3-4weeks to arrive
I’ll be honest
I was a little disappointed with the course
I did not learn much from it and no idea if passed or failed , certainly not on the day apart from the shooting test
Some of the learning material contradicted itself and the picture ID section was a little bit strange.
Even that was wrong to the written wording .
Lots of room for doubt on some of the pics or could’ve been very testing
Would like to have know at the time what the answers were once I’d finished the test.
I was told DMQ are aware but because certain individuals that write the courses were to busy elsewhere,
The course criteria would not be getting changed anyway .
As an educational course , how can you learn if you don’t know what was right or wrong..
I have been told since I have passed and just awaiting a cert through the door
Be interesting to see if there is a score on how I did in with the Cert and which questions I got wrong ,
if any

I did the NGO online version, there was no score with the certificate or indication of which answers were right or wrong. I agree that some of the questions were ambiguous at best and elements of the course were contradictory. I do know that I got a perfect score on the id and I couldn't fault the pictures, what was your concern about them?

3 things came to mind with the ID slides

(1). The initial rules of the ID stated that yearlings were based on 2-3 year olds

(2) one of the pics maybe no6 had a wild boar in with some stripeys.
That should suggest that was an adult female with young but it looked more like a young boar .
Definitely did not look mature and no tell tell signs to say it was a female or even the mother of the young.
It looked to young
To this day I don’t know the real answer to that pic ,
but I put mature female

(3) as the course had a lot of reading and structure to driven hunting
There was no pics with a group or sounder of boar to identify from.
Surely a big thing with driven is identification on the run..
10 pics with a couple that were almost the same pic .. should in my eyes Atleast have a couple of pics with a larger group and identify one which has been circled with in that .

The options that we were given were male/female & mature/juvenile, I did query ahead of the assessment what their definition of juvenile was. All the slides were identifiable as such, I think that the one with a sow with young is a bit ambiguous insofar as both juveniles & mature are present but only the sow was identifiable for gender. I totally agree that it would be better to have a few group pictures to id a specific animal from replicating an actual stalking scenario.
