Battery Driven Lawn Mowers

There are a few recommendations already but I can highly recommend a makita battery mower, especially if you already have or plan on getting any of their other battery tools. We have a battery mower (takes 2x 18v batteries) and their strimmer. My wife hated our petrol mower because it was bulky and heavy when not driving itself forward but now is quite happy to cut the grass, she says she enjoys it! I also bought a makita hedge trimmer but although very quiet it definitely lacks the power of our old petrol one. No starting problems though!

My son is a horticulturist and runs a small business. They are 100% electric and use ego tools. Have to say I’m very impressed with them

I have moved to Stihl strimmer, hedge cutter and also the long reach cutter, less noise and vibration so much nice to use and no fussing with fuel deterioration.

The electric lawnmower is next.

To be fair - I have an Aldi battery mower and it is superb. I use it to mow my own very small patch along with my parent’s larger lawns. First cut on theirs this year was both long and wet and it coped extremely well.

Fuel/gas/petrol/diesel for me - thunder and chrome! You can run and service a good machine for decades, - when a wee retirement battery machine stops working it’s into the skip at the recycling centre, and go buy a new one. False economy, and no, you’re not saving the planet.

I use a battery stihl at work for a few small lawns that would equal yours in area, never had an issue so far, although I did have range anxiety when first using it. From what you say though, I'd seriously look at the robot cutters, lots of research suggests lawn quality improves when they are used

Yes, I’ve got a lot of friends with robot mowers, both of my girlfriends brothers have them too. Most of them have large 1 to 2 acres of lawn and it saves them loads of time and petrol. They are superb and the lawn improvement is clear to see. I think an important part of this is that because they mow so regularly they don’t have to collect the cut grass thus mulching the lawn and improving things.
Only downside that I have heard is some people claiming that they are killing hedgehogs 🦔 mercilessly. I find this hard to imagine, but maybe it’s true.

Kindest regards, Olaf

My parents went fully battery a few years ago. My nearly 80 year old mother still happily uses a battery strimmer, mower and hedgecutter. My Pa, who needs a wheely frame still uses a battery walk behind lawn mower.

Beauty of batteries is they need recharging after about 40 minutes - makes them take a break.

And being 400 miles away the idea of them driving petrol engined machines does make me whince.

Living in a city, electric tools are so much nicer for neighbours.

Partners niece has a robotic mower and it does a super job. Saw some of the latest Husqvarna ones at RHS Malvern earlier this month.

My wife has a Lidl one…..excellent. It’s tiny, light and battery lasts 20-25 mins, so we have a spare battery.
When my petrol mower finally dies, I think I might switch over to a battery one as well. Husqvarna have got a battery power range which looks good on paper.

Due to age etc. I'm thinking of changing from my petrol lawn mower to a battery-powered one. I've been very impressed with a Stihl battery-powered chain saw and wondered if anyone has had experience with a battery powered lawn mower.

It will have to deal with a fair area not just a pocket handkerchief-sized lawn. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. This will have to be battery-powered, not electric.
An acquaintance of mine has invested in a robot battery power lawnmower apparently IIRC he has about an acre of grass. Can't recall the brand but it was c£5k due to its size/capabilities. He said it was great but won't do stripes!!
