Best flea treatment

I have two Bavarian mountain hounds, both track, and I’m looking for a flea/tick treatment that works! Our vet has sold us frontline for 5 years but this seems to not work as well as it did!

Any recommendations?

I think Nexguard tablet is what we're on. Never had a tick or flea despite going around sheepy and deery areas with long grass.

That's what the vet recommended and she's the one with the fancy white coat.

seems to work and doesn't affect the dogs in any way. Two teckels

I will speak to our vet and hopefully recommend a few things, she keeps recommending front line just isn’t working now.

I use Nexguard Spectra for my 4 springers, a bit expensive but keeps them tick and flea free.
It’s also a worming tablet so covers everything in one dose.

Frontline is an old chemical now and we do see a significant number of cases where it doesnt seem to do the job. It is also a significant cause for concern due to contamination of waterways and damage to invertebrate life.
The newer products containing Isoxazoline based compounds (Bravecto, Simparica, Nexguard)are forming the mainstay of flea and tick control products now and work well and seem well tolerated. In addition they are largely faecally excreted and are of less concern as far as waterway contamination goes.

agree with above frontline is fipronil based and doesnt control fleas any more.
id only use a treatment for 3 months before changing to a different active.
if a vet was pushing frontline id find a new vet

Frontline plus is another option.

But as stated above Bravecto, Simparica, Nexguard are preferable options for the effective control of flea and ticks.

I have the boys on the original Simparica which treats flea, tick and sarcoptic mange (they come in close contact with a lot of foxes)

My dogs dont suffer fleas since i built the kennels . Occasional ticks but then we have deer and sheep here. Central heating and carpets tends to create flea issues and my dogs got them when housed in the home with heating and carpets

Slightly off topic but is there any talk on Frontline being discontinued? I'm not a dog owner so unaware however in the Pest Control industry products containing Fipronil are being discontinued as of March '24.

I was lucky enough to see the difference between front line spot on and Brevecto first hand. My Mal had picked up fleas from some horrible shi*ty cats and I tried front line which was pretty pointless. My wife's terrier(ist) was on brevecto and they didn't come near her or if they did they dropped off dead. Put the Mal on the same tablet and she was clear in a couple of days. I originally thought the fleas were just sh*t scared of the phycotic Patterdale (like we all are) but no the brevecto was brilliant stuff. It's a shame some dogs have a funny reaction to it

As a fisherman please don’t use any topical treatments. Frontline/stronghold or flea collars. When they go in the water it washes off and kills the aquatic insect life.
Tablet treatments the way to go please

Previously used Frontline, it stopped working so moved over to Bravecto, no more fleas or ticks on my Cockers or Patterdale.

Use Advocate I believe is what we use. Vet said frontline is completely useless now. My lab got fox mange somehow and was tearing her hair out but advocate cleared up the issue of scratching in a couple of days
