Best swivels for a sling?

Hi StephenJD,
Both of the Niggeloh slings my wife and I have use 20mm swivels and most of the ones listed on the Niggeloh website indicate the same.

As mentioned by @NullMac the Recknagel swivels come with either 3mm or 3.5mm pins plus they also have two different sizes for where they fit on the stud that is screwed into the stock. These are 6mm or 8mm.

My suggestion is to measure your stud size and the size of the hole in the stud (metric drill bits make this easy) and order the Euro version which I believe fits the 20mm slings. From memory the US version is for 25mm slings. View attachment 303573
Perfect, thank you for the detailed reply. Very helpful. I’ll do exactly that and report back.

Thanks also to @NullMac and @palo for your replies too 🙂

Ehrr, almost.
US or EU is a matter of the stud size only.
The US stud is 8mm wide and has a 3.6mm hole. The EU version is 6mm wide with a 3mm hole.
Both can be had with wide and narrow loops for the actual sling attachment.

I've always used the talon ones from Uttings which screw shut. I've never had one come undone by accident. Also make sure the sling itself is solid, again I like the ones that you adjust and then screw a nut and bolt shut with two flat head screwdrivers. Make sure the stud into the rifle has a nut on the inside.

Thanks @Steff, very helpful.

I found this explanation of the various options on the Alan Rhone website in case helpful for anyone else (4th photograph)

Indeed. Recknagel themselves denominate 21mm loops as EURO and 26mm loops as US.
But to my knowledge there is no standard regarding the loop width neither in the US nor in Europe.
My experience suggests that German 'standard' slings tend to have 20mm ends. The fittings on a Baikal gun I had were also for 20mm sling-ends.
UK/US generally seems to be 1", but 1.25" swivels are available for wider slings (I have them for an Andy's Leather Rhodesian, for example).

In case helpful for anyone else in the same position, I went with a pair of Recknagel detachable sling swivels with the extra security of the screw / nut closure. The 20mm Euro-style loop and a 3.5mm x 8mm stud proved to be the right option to attach a Niggeloh Premium II sling to my Sako 85 S
