8x42 leica's my rifle has an 8x56 Schmidt scope so it made sense to match the magnification. Also the size & weight of the binoculars was taken into consideration.

8x for me and I work open hill and forestry dawn dusk and daytime. Had a pair of Zeiss 10x40B now have Leica 8x42 geovids which are vastly superior in every department. I do like the zeiss dialyt 7x42 though.

I was torn between voting for 7(x42) and 8(x30, x40 or even x56), It had to be the 8x because it is so versatile.

i have a lucky 50-50 split on my stalking, woodland arable a even mix, so i went for a popular 8.5 make all my shooting is 0-250 which is perfect i found the 10x just a little to twitchy when looking at roe antlers, but that could just be me

No one has mentioned I/S (Image stabilisation) I have stated using a pair of Canon stabilised binoculars and they are working well.

8 x 56 so the maximum light is gathered using the "exit pupil 7mm x the objective lense" rule.
I'd use 9 x 63 if they wern't so heavy.
I think the trick is to use the same mag' as your scope.
