He has seen better days and his condition is 'lean' rough old antlers too.
He is being active in the arvo and probably because he is well up a creek system away from roads and bush tracks.

One of the anomalies of sambar stags ,they are unlike any other deer species.
Can be in velvet or hard antler at any time. Last week this V stag was at the same tree.

There are reds,fallow up here and hoggies down further south on the coast

Well no one seems to exactly know Kj,I certainly dont. For a long time a widely held belief that hasn't been completely ruled out is that some stags will carry their antlers over two years instead of the single year.
I personally have no proof except some stags that I have shot have had antlers worn to such a point that you would think that it was impossible for that wear to have occurred in a single year.
Sambar are so different and unlike the usual deer species and even now hunters are finding out more info on them and their secrets. For the hunter that wants the actual hunt to be part of the memory of the day in taking one of these deer whether hind/stag/spikey/calf they are like no other. They don`t stand on an outcrop loudly proclaiming their whereabouts like the reds and fallow in the rut,they are silent bastards which makes it all the tougher....sometimes I wished that they would roar!
Unfortunately the animal is a tough quarry to take one out in the bush and the usual weak as pi$$ mentality comes to the fore in that spotlighting and thermalling is the way of those that want the easy way to put a head on the wall.

This wonky young stag that my old dog alerted me to one evening has had his antlers for a very long time as can be seen. Before any ask,I removed the dog in the pic as he is shy.
