Bipod recommendations

Hi all,

Looking for bipod recommendations for my Tikka T3X please. Will primarily be used for stalking, ideally something that can be removed easily as i find it gets in the way when in a hight seat etc.

Thanks in advance.

@Dr. Strangelove could well be right, I’ve been through a few.

In all honesty I wouldn’t both with the Spartan bipod. Fumbling to get one out at the point you need it. They come up for sale rather regularly. I’ll leave you to form an opinion why this may be.

Then there is the thought, do you need a bipod at all. They are good for zeroing but would a set of quad sticks actually serve you better.

If you still want a bipod which to be fair are handy to have you would benefit from fitting a picatinny rail to the stock replacing the front sling swivel. Don’t get one with a Pan feature. They introduce poor recoil management.

Harris are tried and trusted. You can get picatinny models. They just work. You don’t need to load them with forward pressure to lock the legs up for a solid platform. They look ugly and old but don’t let that be a deciding factor. The picatinny mounting feature doubles the price. I would just pick one up secondhand as they come up regularly and just leave it on the sling swivel. Fit and forget.

Atlas CAL and the new Tier One Tactical bipod are similar. Similar in price and function. The Tier one’s legs pull out without the need to pull a collect so can be seen as simpler. I have no idea what the Atlas weighs but the Tier One is 340g. Just be aware that Tier One in there usual infinite wisdom haven’t identified the updates by calling it a mark 2. It’s the one on their website.

Consider the length of any bipod. Where are you really going to be using it? Heather, rolling dale’s or the vale of York that’s flat as a pancake and the chance of a safe backstop from any height bipod slimmer than a slim thing.

Other than some special circumstances I can’t actually remember the last time I was on a bipod shooting deer. Just stick with quack sticks 🤣

/\ this. Used the Spartan pro hunt for 4 years. Never real happy with it, the fidgeting magnet, can’t fold down legs etc. Nearly convinced myself that I needed to pull the trigger on a Spartan vidar but they were out of stock, so I went back to my old 9-13”, notches, sling swivel mounted Harris for my annual trip on the hinds 2 weeks ago. Since decided I’m Going to save myself £400 and take the 100g weight penalty that sticking with the old, ugly and somewhat agricultural design of the Harris provides, for the simple reason; it just works.

Looks like Spartan have a new folding leg model. Looks interesting but I can’t see it on their website. Just the google results. I really like my MDT ckye pods but they really are spendy.

Had a Spartan and got rid of it pretty fast. Good old reliable Harris swivel model for stalking. I've also got an Atlas excellent for target shooting but rattles so don't use it for stalking.

I've written several times on here in the past about my positive experiences with Spartan's (search function available).

For years I lugged a Harris around permanently affixed to the front of my many rifles - WHY, just WHY. Indeed, over the years they got longer (to cover Summer grass) and HEAVIER. Most shots I take are from quads (another similar thread) but every now and then I do need a bipod so I carry the bipod around on the side of my bino pack, thereby not adding to the rifle's weight or affecting balance. Moreover, the same universal mount fitted to each of my rifles fits not only the bipod(s), but my quad sticks (Blaser V2), a Spartan suction cup mount used for quick off-the-bonnet shots (no need to vacuum down) and the Dead Rest mounted on the front of my ATV. Aka, I have a Spartan Ecosystem, all with very minimal weight on the rifle!

Normally use Harris but now have Spartan Javelin pro hunt tac which looks like the missing link. I will give that a good test.
