Blaser calibre combo, again.

30-06 is a very good allround calibre and with the correct load/bullet suitable for just about anything that walks save for truly big dangerous game. Also flat shooting so you can reach out to 300 yards for open plain and mountain hunting.

243 with 85 to 100gn bullets good on Roe and bigger Deer, 6.5x55, again flat shooting with light bullets, but take a heavier bullet for bigger game. 25-06 is v good open ground calibre, but too fast imho for closer range stuff.

You might want to check that - MV for England?

Plus the 'chart' you refer to (same as the one at the end of chapter 13 of the HOG?) will be a guide to the minimum advised or legal for a given species - no reason why one from a higher band can't be allowed for a lesser quarry provided it is capable of making a humane kill - see 13.9 HOG.

Thanks for that Orion - I'll have a proper read of it again

ME is the key thing for England and the 9.3 has plenty of that!

The way to get it is to show that you have good reason to possess, that can be a trip abroad to shoot plains game or driven boar. Once good reason is established and based on the HO guidelines it may also then be cleared for AOLQ in the UK (as can incidentally the .375 H&H)

.25-06 & .30-06....yes...same bolt head and same case but beware similar cases as a friend of mine found out when he fired a .260 Rem down a 7-08 tube!!!! Oooops!

That's the one! Get the 9.3x62 conditioned for UK use (no big issue) and your covered for everything.

This is great. If you can shoot a .30-'06 you can shoot a 9.3x62. Not much bigger in terms of recoil and a shove rather than a smack. Not great to shoot prone in a light sporting rifle but that isn't really surprising.

Scrummy

Thanks for all your replies so far. I'm digesting the info! I see they do a 6.5 x 47 lapua in the R8. Just caught my eye! I'm guessing this is a whole different ball game and would need to be hand loaded mainly? Any advantage of this over a 6.5 x 55?

For a two barrel combo I would go for 6XC/243win and 30-06, same bolt head and covers everything from varmint to big stuff. If you really wont a 6.5x55 then go for 6.5x55 and 9.3x62. I personally have a nice three barrel compo; 6XC, 30-06 and 9.3x62 which covers pretty much everything !

Thanks konnari. I think I'm moving that way, along the lines of .243 and .30-06 as suggested by you and Eddymc. I like the 6.5 with the 120gr for fox and deer dual round. But they're expensive and not sure if I will be fully committed to the reloading side. .243 readily available, cheaper, can go with some light 58gr or 70 gr for fox. .30-06 will then give good use for boar and advantage for me over the 9.3 (if just 2 barrels) would be to use as a long range rifle in Scotland for instance. That's my thoughts at the moment!

Having the same thouhts , have a 6.5 creedmore was thinking of what to partener that with , keep coming back to 30 06

I'm partly tempted to go with .308 again for everything. 150gr for deer. 180gr for boar. Keep my .222 just for fox. ???

get a R8 in .308 and 222 barrel Pretty well covered for everything and you can add other barrels as you like.

I have a separate tikka .222 that I use for fox. But in time could get .222/.223 barrel. Would just have to change bolt head over that would be a slight downside

I agree with the 243 and 3006 . I have it myself.

However my best blaser combo is the 12 bore sitting above the 7x57R. Shooting 175gr woodleigh PP and No4 to BB you are ready from feather to fur.

.243 and 30-06, same bolt head, readily available and a wide range of bullets weights to cover almost everything walking on this earth.
R8 two barrels job done.

+1 eddie just done the above and it's the best combo in my option . The other positive is the Blaser barrels don't seem to be be ammo fussy haven't found anything that I wouldn't shoot through them but some a little better than others and home loads it loves em!
