I fully agree, but bear in mind you're not allowed to 'practice' or 'get familiar with' a rifle. Or I'm not anyway...
The firearms and ammunition shall be used for shooting vermin and ground game/fox/deer and any other lawful quarry and for zeroing on ranges or land over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot.
I tried to get 'practice' on my certificate, but failed. I do lots of zeroing. If the police turned up for whatever reason I would explain that I was zeroing rather than practicing. Pedantic, yes, but the law is a pedant
Happily that situation has now changed and the problem has gone away.
As a result of lobbying by SACS the latest edition of the Home Office Guidance at Appendix 3 has a 'new and improved' standard quarry condition that includes "practice". You'll either receive it after renewal or variation, or could now request it to avoid any ambiguity - D&C are applying it 'as is' let's hope other police FLDs follow suit and don't try and tinker/bast*rdise it!
1. Quarry Shooting (for vermin, fox or deer)
• The *calibre RIFLE/COMBINATION/SMOOTH-BORE GUN/SOUND MODERATOR and ammunition shall be used for shooting vermin including fox, and ground game/ deer (delete as appropriate) and any other lawful quarry, and for zeroing-practice on ranges, on land deemed suitable by the chief officer of police for the area where the land is situated and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot.
Back to the OP. Grab that 9.3x62 barrel, you won't regret it.
