Boar and .308 subs

Much discussion on need for heavy calibres/bullets for GB boar but from this video at least it seems .308 subsonics are fine.

With the right bullet in the right place it would take very little to put them down especially using thermal in a wide open space. But if the boar was running between heavy cover, then you had to go and find it you would prefer a big hole straight through to ensure a swift demise.

It would be interesting to know the weight of those boar, the size, or lack of, of an animal though a thermal can be deceiving.

I use .308 subs fairly regularly on boar . They are extremely effective with the correct shot placement regardless of size animal, but you are limited with range

Having watched the video I would highlight that they were all taken with head shots. So long as penetration is adequate it will be fine … until it isn’t!! Chest shots might be a different matter. @Night òwl what shot placement do you suggest? Have you taken many quartering on and broadside with subsonics?

I head shoot all my boar regardless of subs or HV ammunition, wild boar side on is perfect and usually no reason why that cannot be achieved with a little patients/field craft while stalking them, occasionally between the eyes is the only option especially if they see your silhouette under moonlight or sence your presence and start walking towards you

Great, thanks for the clarification 👍

The 22 mag RF is recommended for Pig slaughter, OK very short range indeed mind! Shotgun slugs are not exactly fast either being what ? Up to 1300 fps or so ? That's for Wild Boar of course a far tougher and dangerous animal to take on
Have felt for a long time we should have buck and slugs made fully legal for more deer deer work. Its potentially better than the rifle in some situations imo

Hi, what sort of load are you using? And what sort of stats are you getting from them.
Kindest regards, Olaf

I use hornady sub x with vit N32c
1060fps.
Drop is 70mm @ 120 mtrs
what weight bullet ? I should think they make quite a smack sound on impact eh !
Kindest regards, Olaf

Sub x are 190grn specifically designed for sub sonic loads .
Yes a fair whack

At sea level the bullet is dropping almost one centimeter per one meter of travel @120m. So depending on sight height the above figures would mean zero at approx. 107 meters, and the bullet would be >10cm over POA at halfway (50-60m). Altitude and heat would help some, but in no means it's flat.
