Boots is there such a thing as softer/more flexible?

The official issued ones arnt Altberg. They’re made under licence in turkey.
Altberg made in Yorkshire are 10x better. The Altberg sneaker aquas are probably the best boot I’ve owned. Fully waterproof and super soft and lightweight.

I like the tabbing boot myself, the ankle is ultra supple and as you say, a different boot entirely to the surplus Altburgs that are often available cheaply.

Cover them in polish and go walking for a couple of days. When you're done, they will be fine 👍 they're a pain in the arse to break in. My last pair took about 2 weeks of daily use
See I have done this…lathered them in leder Gris and hair dryer-ed them first to make sure it soaked in then went stalking and wore them every day at work…I’ve given it a good go at this point I think. I get sore balls of my feet with them not sure what’s going wrong tbh…

It's a perennial question - best boots etc. I use either some decent lined Aigle wellies as they are comfy and keep low crawling bugs at bay and are fine for up to 3 hours. Easy to clean oomsk off when you've gralloched and easy to take on an off. On the other hand, for longer days I've currently settled on some Aku Pilgrims. They issue these to some of the armed forces it seems and so you can always find a cheap pair on ebay being sold perhaps by someone who has reported them 'lost'!! ;) I paid £55 for my gortex lined ones about 18 months ago and they are still in excellent condition.
I've got 2 pairs of the Aku's - one gortex lined for winter and one non gortex for summer. I also them for through hiking around the UK and for days buggering about on Exmoor and Dartmoor and they are just great. Very comfortable straight out of the box - in fact so much so that I though there must be something wrong.
I've had expensive boots over the last 30 years for hiking and latterly stalking and the last pair of Hanwags I sold on for a huge loss as I just found them heavy and stiff. If you visit any through hiking forums it's a well debated subject there too! Personally nothing too heavy, and I think your ankles and feet need to be flexible. I've found the tall lace up boots to be far too restrictive and heavy and they simply don't allow your legs and things on the end to flex and move like they were engineered to do. This is only my opinion though!

Well I’ve just done battle on eBay with someone from Belfast and bought a pair of the Iturri CWW for 35.89£…

They look in good condition and at that price I’ll give them a go and report back.

The Salomon’s are out as they seem to fall apart quickly…I’m still quite interested by the grisport and John Norris and I’m skiing end of next week so might have a good look around the town at what’s they’ve got. It’s the Dolomites so a mountain walking destination in summer!

Thank you for such a thorough answer I’ve got aigle wellies and love them!

Try a pair of crocs. Very soft and bouncy. Your skin is totally waterproof.

Personally I much prefer a stiff boot that acts as a step when go up and down steep slopes or across tussock and bogs.
There are a surprising number of African Professional Hunters who only wear crocs - even amongst snakes, scorpions, gin traps etc

Most boot problems are caused by ill fitting, and can be remedied, insoles only work if the boots are the right size in width and shape, how many people slip there boots on and then lace them up ? When what you should do is place your heel on the rear of the boot with your toes pointing at a angle ( does that make sense) your foot is then at the rear of the boot with, allowing your foot to seat properly under the laces and tongue, not teaching people how to suck eggs , but some people don,t know this, and yes I fit boots to customers daily , crispi are my favourite.

Heard lots of good things about Crispi and was very surprised how light my mate's pair were for the size of them. Never worn them though...

Hi all,

I’ve currently got a pair of Altberg defenders bought new for 75£ they are the official issue ones.

Tbh I’m really not getting along with them, I’ve replaced the insole with a sorborthane posh one and still no good, sore feet after a stalk/day in them.

They just feel extremely stiff and clompy almost.

I’ve read as many thread on here as possible and have had a good look at all the options, crispi, Hanwag, Meindl, zamberlan etc etc.

These all seem like quite stiff mountaineering style boots which I can understand would work in the highlands but seem a bit much for lowland stalking in the South east?

I was wondering is there a style of boot which is a bit softer/more flexible at all?

Any recommendations or what should I do instead of the Altbergs?

Cheers!
The issue Altbergs are made to a price point for the MOD and aren’t as good quantity as civi bought altbergs. I’ve had some and they never ‘wore in’ that well.

Beware the crispi titan boot is narrower than the Nevada, if you want a high boot get the hunter gtx, one thing you learn is modern boots with gortex , are not designed to stretch and wear in.

Another pal of mine swears by these for every day use, quite aside from stalking. How do you find the transition from ‘normal’ every day footwear to these things? The company have a great reputation for customer service and replacing boots apparently.
i only have the boots , haven't fully transitioned to barefoot but i have to say i find them incredible and would highly recommend trying them
