Bullet heads

after reloading for 54 years I don't care what people call them if they call them bullets or heads I know what they mean and after 54 year I have nothing to prove

The main problem with the use of 'heads' for bullets is, as has been pointed out, the risk of supporting and encouraging ignorance to the extent that it may give rise to dangerous misunderstandings of related terms such as 'headspace': misunderstandings which might have been avoided if folk who actually know better stuck to the correct usage.

I can imagine that experienced sportsmen and reloaders have nothing left to prove. But this isn't about them.

I think the people that get upset and get there knickers twisted over someone using bullet heads or heads have a problem with their headspace

Day one the parts on a cartridge where named wrong. Over time this will be corrected like it or not. I don't mind anyone calling them heads, makes perfect sense.

No it doesn’t.
If the head is at the primer end of the round of ammunition, then the bullet which is at the other end should be called the foot, maybe toe? Or even tail.

Day one cases didn't have shoulders or necks. It doesn't pay too be too anatomically concrete about the use of anatomical terms - particularly if it leads those who don't know better into error.

Calling bullets 'heads' makes no sense at all, unless willfully trying to irritate your more-susceptible fellow-shooters.
Anyhow, we've had this discussion before, and cartridge-case nomenclature hasn't changed yet.
So there. Geschosskopf.

When I was reading commando books as a lad, I don’t remember the excitement as the hero of the story stated “as I charged towards the enemy trench, the heads whistled past my head”
I think I may have been confused somewhat at that.

I think people who can't see the importance of using the correct terminology haven't thought through the potential consequences.

Oh & it's their, not there.:-P

What are the potential
consequences like a cartridge you have a shoulder a neck and a you're head up you're ar--e. Good look with you're DSC1 then you can be a real expert. You only started the thread to impress people with you're superior knowledge sorry but you don't impress me wannabe

I distinctly remember one commando book which said "Jack pulled the trigger and there was a click..he was out of ammo! He frantically searched his pockets for bullets, then [carefully set up his reloading apparatus and began the painstaking process of loading the bullets into cases to make completed rounds. Unfortunately the terrorists had killed everybody by the time he'd finished, but hey, at least everything had remained terminologically exact which is really the most important thing here].

It is a controversial subject Jack. Some folk will go to any length to up the post count. Even starting a controversial thread in the wee small hours. odder and odder.john

I don’t agree. It’s only a small percentage of Brits and Irish that use the incorrect terminology. If in the US or anywhere else, no one refers to bullets as heads. The incorrect term will never prevail in my opinion due to the tiny minority that use it. It shows a naivety in the individuals knowledge when they use the term “heads.”
