Caledonian Sleeper

Suit yourself. As far as I'm concerned you'd be falling foul of the railways terms of carriage, which is an offence in itself.

Just being a gobshite doesn't automatically mean you're correct.
Yes and being an ignorant t**t does not make you right either. I understand that you think you are the worlds authority on every subject but that still does not make you right.

I was just wondering how many people had run amok on a train going north and shot the passengers ?
Nice to see these things based on sound evidence - the ammo in a safe seems a very logical and reasonable way out, assuming that whoever runs the train, values passengers ?

I've been asked that one single time, and I answered "It's my gear". That was it. As you say, it's all about discretion, and also, people don't see what they don't expect to see. Hence the fact that you can carry a neatly packaged broken down gun in a rucksack and a deer in a Waitrose cool bag with Christmas scenes on it.
Aka "these are not the droids you are looking for" :)

Write and complain to Rupert Soames, CEO of Serco, the outsourcing company that operates the Caledonian Sleeper. He is a very keen stalker and a very nice man.

Kind regards,

Carl

He is.
And he is.

Seriously, Soames went out the way for Serco to keep the the Caledonian Sleeper franchise in no small measure due to Soames’ desire to be able to continue to travel up to Scotland to shoot.
So, if we write to him, and explain what/how the muppets under him have (mis-) interpreted the rules, I have no doubt he will get it changed in our favour.
I don’t see myself using the service any time, but will write to him anyway: he is a real friend of our sport.

Don't see that it matters whether it's a law, a bye law or engraved on a stone tablet, it's their train and their decision, if you get caught you won't be travelling with them, bet that'll put a serious crimp in your arrangements.

It would be interesting to ask Soames if he takes his own ammunition when he travels to Scotland on the sleeper for his stalking trips, or even if he is aware of the rules regarding it. I'm sure he would not want to be seen as an exception to the rule because of his position, at least not publicly.

His estate is up there. No need to take stuff so probably not aware of the problem.

Please keep your posts civil people, its a bit pointless when people start hurling abuse on here. Were all in the same boat as conservationists, game managers, stalkers alike in agreeing that rules such as these make no sense. No doubt clueless bureaucrats will continue to try and impose restrictions and we need to reason with them politely.

There is a reason the sleeper gets called the "Deerstalker" and hopefully management will see sense. Last week I recon the train was running at below 10% occupancy.

I am happy to write a letter to Soames, Caledonian Sleeper or Serco in a few days. If a more formal body such as BDS or BASC want to take this case up instead of me or advise on what to say, please PM me?

I used the Caledonian Sleeper weekend before last to get to Aviemore for a mountaineering trip. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We were one hour late getting into Aviemore and two and a half hours late getting back into Euston which resulted in a 75% refund. I thought it would be a very convenient way of going stalking.

I love the Caledonian Sleeper. After I got married in 2012 I used it to take my wife on our honeymoon. She had no idea where we going or how, I just had her meet me in London with the passports (not needed, just to keep her guessing).

If I were using it to go stalking I would deny all knowledge of any ammunition and keep my “binocular box” locked. Up to and including claiming that the only key was in the hands of the guide at the destination. Best bet is not to mention it at all though.

As an aside I have previously negotiated Southern, Southeastern, London Underground and New York metro all with cased rifle and ammunition.

If I ever come back to the UK a rifle that can be easily broken down into a non gun-case looking case would be high on my list of priorities....
