Capable, good quality scope for a TRG 22, mostly target use

Hi, I've just ordered a Sako TRG 22 in 6.5 Creedmoor and I'm trying to choose a scope that will do it justice. This is mainly for target work but might be used at a push for stalking, bearing in mind the weight of the rig. There are plenty of options out there, most of them hideously expensive. I'd prefer FFP with an upper magnification in the mid-20's at least. I'm heading towards a PM2 5-25 x 56 but there are other likely candidates like the Kahles 525i. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? Are the cheaper Vortex Strike Eagle or Delta Stryker 5-25 x 56 models competitive?

I'm also considering the best mounting system, the Spuhr 20 moa looks fairly substantial but is it the best option.

Currently running a March 3-24 x 42 compact tactical FFP scope on my standard Sako 85 which is a versatile set up that works really well and I don't want to break it up. In any case I want something more focused. Weight is not so much of an issue.

PMII Ultrashort to keep the weight down a bit will help.

If not either of your initial suggestions will suit. Especially the K525i

Other option is the Leica PRS. Much like the PMII Ultrashort

The khales range of scopes are very good the 525 is similar price to the Schmidt. The Schmidts 5-25 has had an internal update. What that actually is I’m not sure but to be honest considering the TRG is a £4700 rifle now days I recon anything less wouldn’t be doing it justice 😂

I’ll be really harsh and say, have you considered an Accuracy International AT-XC? They are a little more expensive but have been designed to be a target rifle and are more up to date. Not to knock the TRG I have owned a couple of them but the core design is over 20 years old now. The stock is very comfortable to shoot prone but won’t be great should you think about any of the PRS style competitions. You are spending a lot of money so it’s worth making those considerations. Might not be what you want to hear. I’m all for doing it right first time round.

I'm into buying right first time so I'm with you there but I'm paying £3750 for the rifle which is about £1000 more than the Tikka CTR/UPR plus a decent stock option that was my original thought. I did look at the AI offerings and they are awesome but the price was in a different league so I looked away quickly. I currently shoot with a club a few times a year, I want to increase this frequency and become more competitive, i.e stand a good chance of winning. I wouldn't mind trying out some shooting on steel if I get chance.

I used a muzzle brake and it certainly mitigated recoil. I shot one of my best ever groups with my original .308 TRG and factory bipod. I came third in the royal British legion competition at Bisley with that rifle, my first ever comp. Then shot in a European Sniper Competition in Czechia, I came mid pack against some serious shooters. I was proud of my placing.

The factory bipods are expensive but work well and complete the TRG system. I also used a Harris. Because they are simple. So use what suits you. The TRG bipod needs to be loaded differently to the Harris.

I’ll go against the trend and say the TRG isn’t bad for stalking. Just heavier than a traditional stalking rifle. I take my AIAX out regularly for deer.

The Spuhr direct mount is also the only mount I would use. They look great and work just as well. If you have the funds I’d be tempted to go the same way as @Andy RV I used both a 3-20 and 5-25 on mine.

My vote would be a K525i like the one on mine 😜

The one thing we all have in common is the Spuhr direct mount so that’s a good place to start 👍🏻

I take mine stalking occasionally as it’s now a 6mmCM. But it’s definitely not the most comfortable due to being a touch heavier. It’s manageable though.

Sorry for going off topic here but what barrel is that

It shoots about the same as it did previously. Pretty damn good. Can’t complain with sub half inch groups at 100m with factory ammo.

The weight is less than the original barrel, but you pay a fair premium for it and in fairness it’s still not a light rifle. Drop me a PM if you’ve got more questions so we don’t derail this geezers thread 👍🏻

I've got two Nightforce, both with zero stop but F2. One is an NX8 4-32X50, the other an NXS 8-32X56. THE NX8 £1400, the NXS £1295.
