You can not really legislate against someone throwing a stone or ball via a traditional sling or whether using a piece of elastic.
It could be argued a bow or crossbow is not illegal to hunt with if they shot anything other than an arrow.
Iirc hunting with a bow is not illegal. Shooting something with an arrow is. (Stupid law).
 
As a kid fishing I always had the 'catty' (Milbro) at hand for the water-rats.....(bank voles) passing by......and anything else for that matter. Oh the joy of growing-up in the 60's/70's as an almost feral child about the countryside.
I've move on now ......I've one in 6.5 Creedmoor...😆

I have an old catty i made a few years ago on site from construction ply and Theraband strips. We used to bash the rats with m8 nuts when on a ghoster or nightshift. One of the young mates working with us was a marksman with his one.
 
Gosh this brings back memories. My mate and I both had Milbro aluminium catties. Weekly trip to Ebrall Bros in Shrewsbury to get new elastic.

Living close to a stream first thing was to go to the shingle and fill all our pockets with suitable stones. Sank innumerable cans light bulbs and alike all thrown into the stream and healthy chase down stream to ensure all were hit/sunk/bust. Hunting moorhens and rats was standard fare as was the odd woody. In fact nothing was safe. Cherished ammo were marbles or steel ball bearings. Occ drilled lead bullet was unleashed. More than once direct hit on R thumb caused extreme pain and eventual loss of thumb nail.

We spent many hours of endless fun with our catties, must of distributed many pounds of shingle on our travels.

Sadly Mibro catty lost however all my kids had as birthday presents so numerous Barrnet catties and marbles in the house somewhere.

Great stuff mate , there is a lot to be said about hunting with a catty as you said endless fun even still in middle age I love it, and as for fieldcraft I dont think there is a more challenging way to hunt as you know you have to get real close.
 
A Malay workmate of mine related that they as children used to hunt Chameleon with a catty,fashioned from cow horn, he had one sent over for me which I still have! I might add, the skill was to get the shot off before' it blended with its surroundings.
