does anybody know if there is a necked down .270 cartridge with a 6mm head.

or is the cartridge far to powerful for the 6mm head (i know this will be an obvious barrel burner) but i am just curious if someone could run this through thier ballistic software just to let me know how many fps and flbs that it would achieve.

thank you remy17

The .270win is a necked down .30-06.
The .308win is a shortened .30-06.
The .243win is a necked down .308.

So logically isn't the .243win what you are talking about.:suss:

.243 Weatherby magnum perhaps ?

Thinking up new cartridges is a bit of a pointless exercise really. I think most of these things have been done before.

sorry, but not the 243, as it is a short case in a short action whereas the 270 ctride is a long case in a long action. and i think the metric conversion offhand is 6.18 something, oh and it would probably be a 26"barrel if anybody runs it through "quikload" (think thats the name of the software)

Are you asking about the .240 Gibbs, perchance?

Actually, originally derived from a .30-03 case but I would think definitely do-able from both a .30-06 or .270 win

Gibbs did quite a few other variations based on the .270. He seems to have pushed the shoulder further forward, making the neck shorter, than Ackley and got the velocities to show for it.

I can't think of a 6mm/'06 cartridge other than various wildcats. I have a couple of proprietary british numbers in my collection of dummies which come close, but are belted cases. The brits. beat the yanks in developing some calibres.

If you want a really hot number there is the .244 H&H Magnum which is a necked-down .375 H&H. This is a towering inferno, and more missile than cartridge.

More realistically, there is the .240 H&H BRNE (.240 Apex) which is .30-06 case size. There are still a few rifles around still using this, although I know only of one.

6x62 Freres 100g sp 3300fps

Kenny Jarret invented the 243 catbird. It is the .270 Win necked down to 24 caliber and fire formed in an Ackley chamber. It's reconed the barrel would only last about 1500 rounds! However when your putting the 105's out at 3500 fps it might just be worth it!

The head size of the 6mm Remington is the same as the 270 Winchester and all the Mauser based cartridges as it measures 0.473". Hope that helps ;) after all you did say head. That is the head size.
