Cellular 3G trail cameras - reviews

Seems to be a fairly common questions pops up about cellular trialcams - that is, the sort that send images to your phone over the mobile network, so I thought I'd post a couple of thoughts from use over the last few years.

In short, they are all a bit lacking!! Certainly, the HIK and Spypoint ones I've used and they all cost £150-160ish.

Spypoint LTE & Flex
I've been using these for a few years now and had at least two replaced under 2 year warranty, They are out all weathers and seem to have a lifespan of about 12-18 months.
  • 100 photos a month sent free (you can easily run through that in a couple of days depending on settings!)
  • Image quality is ok to see deer / foxes etc are present on the free plan but you can upgrade to an HD plan if needed - I've never bothered so can't comment.
  • Flex model has been a bit fickle - will send notification and preview of images to my phone but when I open the app there is nothing there. Then it'll suddenly start working a few days later.
  • Small, compact design (particularly LTE).
  • Good battery life.
  • Easy to set up and App is generally straightforward to use.
  • Sends photos to your phone on a selectable schedule varying from instant to once a day (instant uses a lot more battery).
HIKMicro
Had one of these for about 6 months now:
  • Big, chunky lump.
  • App and setting are hugely confusing - sort of pidgin english kinda descriptions.
  • Always sends images instantly (at least I can't find a way to change it!).
  • Image quality about the same as Spypoint and same free monthly allowance.
  • There is a setting for "Remote Control" which sounds like the schedule for image downloads to phone but it isn't! it only seems to change when settings are uploaded to the camera and "instant" setting will eat batteries for fun. Has no impact on how often images are sent to your phone (always instantly).
  • Handy setting for "working hours" - good for foxes and bait station so it only takes pics overnight and not burning through the photo allowance on corvids during the day. This is the only redeeming feature for me and only really useful for foxing!
  • App is rubbish - need a refresh it every time I open it for my device to show up.
  • "Delay shot" option seems to set a delay between target detection and image being taken even for the first shot of a sequence, which I think means stuff is missed. It is also the only way of setting a delay between shots to stop your 100 free pics being taken within minutes.

I'm sure others have different views so it might be helpful to others to post them here.

Had the Spypoint LTE, brilliant piece of kit, but I wonder about the lifespan of these things, built in obsolescence, same with game cams, set up right over bait stations they will save you hundreds of hours of mooching around, shot about 170 foxes using these things, many from bedroom window achieved near total wipeout on the farm, worked out about £2 per fox. Both cameras packed up within a short space of each other. I might consider getting another pair but hard to find now!!

Had a pair of Spypoint Solar LTEs out for 18 months now without issue or any engagement - they just work! Worried by reports of 12-18 month life so in/past the danger area. Fingers crossed they continue to deliver because IMHO they do what it says on the tin :thumb:

I’ve got a Zeiss that’s been out for about 4 months. I can’t fault it works really well but I haven’t got anything to compare it to. I can change the settings remotely and pause transmission, which helps if I’m getting a squirrel for example.

I have used the Spypoint a bit and am quite happy on the whole. Easy to setup and use.
Has anyone else experienced issues with micro SD cards suddenly stopping working with the Spypoint LTE camera? Have gone through quite a few cards and they work well for a while then stop working and cannot be reformatted

I had a set of spypoint a while back one was the motherboard which texted pretty quick on activation and the others worked to that, worked fine on fox jobs after the initial set up fiasco ( me 100%) had it for 2 years and bit by bit it failed to the point of a bin job for 2 years but it was a real asset after that I changed to PIR sensors with a tiny red lamp attached at strategic points it was enough to give me the heads up on any movement, now the accolades 👍

Can you elaborate on this please overlay? thanks

The Spy point camera you could buy the main one full loaded one with sim / wi fi etc and the other smaller module ones buy seperately you had to link a module in to the main camera When one was activated it would send a signal to my phone via the main camera
You could have up to 5 modules I think from memory it would say camera number 3 activated I think you had to pay extra for pics but not a text it was a while ago now, I would think they have far better systems now

I liked it because it’s like an early warning system especially for fox work

I’ve been using a Keen Ranger for almost a year now - great bit of kit. Only down side is the detection and IR range; otherwise it does a great job. Having a solar panel it keeps its rechargeable battery topped up too.

Have only just seen this thread but I have been using a spypoint micro LTE for about 5 years now (same camera) and it has worked pretty well for me. Range is about 15-18m. Pics are ok quality (sometimes difficult to tell sex of deer without antlers). 8 lithium batteries seem to last between 6-8months. 100 free photos a month is sometimes enough and top up is cheap and instant. Also had an LM2 model for a few months which seems v similar, although first impression is that the batteries don't seem to last as long. Not used any other cellular cameras for comparison though.

I bought one off Ebay just to try. Solar panel to keep battery charged once you do the initial charge. Annual fee for unlimited data.
So far I've been really impressed for 58 quid...
Annual data sim charge is cheaper than a data only sim from a phone shop and unlimited data.

Have 2 ZEISS Secacams all out to keep an eye on what’s about, I’ve never had a cellular cam before but have 2 of the browning non cellular versions which I also use. The image quality is very similar (more than good enough) but the AI isn’t that intelligent

Interesting. How do the detection ranges and battery life compare (can you use lithium in the Zeiss)?
