Cellular trail cameras.

My two ordinary trail cameras have both given up the ghost at the same time.

Looking into the Cellular versions like the Leica etc. Do you buy the camera then buy a sim deal from a network?

Anyone use one and give me advice what to avoid and how they work regarding data please?

TIA

I have tried quite a few trail cams and found that the Hik M15 gives the best night and day image for that price bracket. I don`t bother buying a data plan to enable video to your phone as I change the SD card once a week and the still pics to your phone give me enough live info.

I use something called Reolink. From China for certain. Works as a burglar thing i.e. records 15 seconds videos on movments.
A bit costly if used stand by so I use the camera mainly when there is a specific need.
Very high standard of pictures/videos taken IMO, in fact much better than from those thermals wich cost 30X up.

SPYPOINT or HIK - much of a muchness. Both work well for me (multiple cameras over several years). Both include a free plan of something like 100 shots a month.

Had a Hik for a few months, extremely battery hungry , seemed to perform ok to start with although picture quality not exciting. After a while it it seemed to be triggered with no subject in the photo,as if the PIR is not lined up with the lens.Would not buy another or anything else Hik.

Tol73, I have used "ordinary" trail cameras with good effect. Picture quality has been really good. I know that yours have gone wrong, but they are not expensive to replace, and the new ones would be brand new. If you spend a lot of money on a cellular type I would worry about them being deliberately damaged, or stolen.

I have a Reolink Keen Ranger PT. The idea was to be able to be completely hands off. Used a ladder to get it up high to try to avoid vandalism. It then runs off 4g and sends the photos and videos to my phone. It has a separate solar panel, so on theory also never needs to be charged. I have found if not using excessively this works well, and from Spring onwards. It does lose charge in the winter so I have toyed with the idea of replacing the panel with a larger one, but haven't needed as of yet.

I am running two Hik m15 sending snapshots to my phone and recording 20 second film clips.
My main gripe is that the battery's are extremely tight in the removable tray. They have to be prised out which is slowly wrecking the battery casing.

Pal runs a few Spypoints in a fenced orchard - I call them Dial a Deer.

Hes only down the road, so there in minutes - its proving very effective...
