Chinese Water Deer

Following a conversation with a friend, we were discussing feeding stations etc, does anybody know what would be good food for Chinese Water Deer, also would a salt lick be any good or possibly harmful, with Selenium Copper or any of the other additives that go hand in hand with salt licks

I found this generic information but it would be good if someone with experience in feeding breaks this down into foods that they find attractive:

Water deer, like the vast majority of cervids, are herbivores. Their favourite foods are a variety of aquatic vegetation. Much of their diet consists of reeds, beets, and fresh shoots of grass. Unlike some other species of deer, Chinese Water Deer are actually very picky eaters. They cannot digest dense vegetation as well as other species, and because of this they choose plants that are less fibrous with higher protein and fat.

This also confirms the fact that so many farmers see them grazing on the fresh shoots and hate it.

Trouble is mate a proper question has been asked ,not the usual rubbish that fills the heads of wanabees .Hopefully someone will give you a proper answer but don’t hold your breath .

Very true maybe the original posters question should have been "what flavour icecream do deer like the best in the summer?" Then maybe there would have been some sensible responses.

Thanks mate that's perfect just the info we were looking for. Just need to find a way to keep it frozen out on the field.

On a serious note. Is there any expert that anyone knows of that has studied this species in great detail?

There’s a new book written by Arnold Cooke which might be of interest to you. I’ve not read it but from what I can gather there’s been a lot of research gone in to it.

This looks like a book on the impact of Alien Species. You might think that by now there would be something written on CWD on there own as the impact of Muntjak are totally different and their feeding habits totally different, like comparing Apples and Oranges.

Not wishing to hijack your thread but why? IMHO they have got to be the easiest species to get into and for the life of me I cannot see why some people will pay to be frank crazy amounts of money to put a hole in one. I see nothing much to get excited about re the trophies either. Still it takes all sorts, though I’d rather do a fox skull mount and I can shoot as many as I like of those for free. Aren’t people crazy.:stir::dummy::stir::rofl:

In a reply yes. People are!
the question comes because a need to reduce numbers, they come of next door ground, its about getting them to an area suitable to shoot, high seats not an option.
But they do taste good.

We are the only place in the world where you can stalk cwd. We have people all over the world visiting, supporting our economy, to shoot this species. We are very lucky indeed and therefore should do what we can to promote a good healthy population. Plus they taste great. My kids wait up for me when I go out after cwd. When I get through the door if I pull out an empty brass casing their little faces light up.
