Cost GP Medical Checks

Shame you don't live in Scotland.
Renewals don't require a doctors letter unless your medical condition has changed during the validity of your certificate and you now need to declare that your suffer from one or more of the conditions listed on the application form.

Cheers

Bruce
but only once you have been through the GP process the first time.

Police Scotland instituted their "no GP letter - no certificate policy on 1st April 2016 and since an FAC/SGC is valid for 5 years, then ANYONE in Scotland who has renewed since 1st April this year has not needed a GP letter (unless their medical condition has changed)
In England and Wales where different forces had and have different policies on GP letters it's quite possible that some renewals will require a GP letter in forces where no letter was previously required, but where the policy has changed and a letter is now required.
Wouldn't it be great if ALL police forces in England Wales and Scotland followed the HO Guidance stopped playing silly bu**ers.

Cheers

Well, you were done (as have other people)
This was the official reply I received when I queried the requirement for a GP letter for renewals where there is no change in the medical status

OFFICIAL

Dear Mr McPherson

Firstly, thank you for your email raising this issue. I have just this week taken over from Ewan who has moved onto a new role so am just starting to find my feet.
I have made some enquiries into your email and can confirm that as long as a GP marker is in place, as things currently stand, Firearm Enquiry Officers should not be asking for further contact with a GP at renewal stages. There may of course be certain circumstances when contact is necessary for a variety of reasons but this should not routinely be the case if the GP marker is in place. Any such contact would be for individual specific purposes.
I am led to believe that statutory changes may be afoot that will require contact with GP's at renewal stages but as this is not yet in legislation it is not to be acted upon.
I have asked my Firearms Licensing Department colleagues in your area to clarify this with their officers and trust that this will aid any confusion that may have arisen. If however there are any further problems please let me know, ideally with details of the FEO and I will make some further enquiries.

Kind Regards
Bruce

Initial reply deleted. Already been responded by the email from licensing posted

Not the case now Bruce. I renewed a few months back and its going to require medical certification every 5 years whether you have even seen a doctor or not in between renewals
Not yet (if ever) - read the reply I received from the head honcho firearms guy on 3 June this year
There is a proposal in the yet to be introduced latest version of the HO Guidance on Firearms which requires a GP letter at first grant and at every renewal, but that Guidance is not yet in effect.
I know of at least 2 people who have renewed recently and were told they had to get a GP letter.
I had been under the impression that this would not be necessary - hence my e mail to police Scotland to clarify the situation
Note that the reply i received says that it is going to be clarified with FEOs that a GP letter is NOT necessary where there are no changes to the applicants medical circumstances.
If you contact me I'll e mail you the reply so you can show it to your FEO and pass it out to anyone you know who is renewing

Cheers

Bruce
