Countryfile and Firearm Licensing

Long drag

Countryfile are covering the Home office rules on Gun Licensing in the UK on BBC 1 :suss: (and the weather)

Alas, it wasn't amusing but just the expected further muddying of the waters. Various parties interpreting the conflicting HO guidance as they see fit.

they also mentioned diabeties this is NOT a medical question on the fac form,YET!

This were mentioned but purely as a means to justify the the GP's position along with asthma. No mention of soft or hard drug consumption which the GP's may not even know about. It all feels like just another stick with which to beat us.

I think most senior policemen won't be happy until it's only them with guns.....oh yes, there's always the proper criminals with guns too.

Interestingly diabetes may not be a question but divulging medication soon brings the topic up. I have type 2 diabetes and was recently queried extensively about my ability to hold and discharge a rifle safely by a firearms officer and this was only replacement of my damaged certificate not renewal. His parting shot was that I would have to be closely monitored and it would be far less painful for me to surrender my certificate than have it revoked. I wouldn't mind but this all stemmed from my new GP misquoting the reason for me taking amitriptylene. I havecert renewal in a couple of months which I expect will be a nightmare

That sounds like a blatent mis-use of power Overlander, on the part of your licencing team and open bullying tactics without the facts to back their concerns up. They are not there to make any decisions but to advise the CI based on the evidence presented against what the law actually states. There are many reasons for taking Amitriptylene including the management of severe or chronic pain such as arthritis, and last time I looked, being in pain was no good reason for revoking a certificate!

Or a car. Also a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands...

Agreed, could be the weapons used by anyone wanting to kill people in numbers, since the ownership of guns is tightly controlled, would be knives, axes and cars. So can we expect the banning of knives (we shouldnt have those, far too dangerous) or very much more detailed licensing for cars with anyone with a 'medical' condition being banned from driving and forced onto public transport /friends.

This control mentality has gone too far - what is wrong with improved vetting using current procedures, since Dunblane and Cumbria etc all stemmed from flaws in police process/insider processing. I hope the junior woman police officer who suspected Thomas Hamilton and recommended refusal of his FAC renewal is now a Chief Con. Promote the best, dismiss the rest.
Who is really being protected by Dunblane 100-year ban? | HeraldScotland

Well I never - very plausible except we all know the back ground and does anyone have evidence of this emotive claptrap ?

Lincolnshire police have been concerned by the numbers of licence holders who have used their licenced firearms to cause harm to themselves or others.

I dont remember seeing any stats to this effect? Still, if you say it, it becomes the truth if you are the police - come on BASC take them on or explain why not !!!!!!

Kes, I have just emailed them for a response. I'll keep the thread updated as and when.

That is both disgraceful and misleading. There is no medical report. The tick form is not a medical report.
From the LMC page "" Lincolnshire Police are intent on implementing a policy where no licences are granted or renewed without a medical report being available."" - this is a completely different matter and does not relate to the current tick form that is causing problems in Scotland.

How can people get this so wrong .... could someone copy and post the form on here ?

Here you go, Miki:

Your practice headed paper

Patient’s address Date

Dear Patient

The police have informed us that you have applied for a firearms/shotgun licence. They have requested medical information to complete this application.

Recent BMA guidance states that GPs should engage with the firearms licencing process, and that in doing so we should levy an administrative fee for this service. The fee for providing this report to the police is £XX.

We have to reply to the police request within twenty one days of receipt of their letter to us, so please supply the fee so that we can meet this timeline.

Yours faithfully
