Damaged Tail

Evening,

My Labrador has split the end of his tail and I am struggling to get it to heal.

I have tried all the usual ideas such as taping a syringe over it, bandaging it etc.

Whatever I do he seems to manage to pull off the coverings and we are back to square one.

Does anyone have any useful and bright ideas?!

I wonder if a vet could cauterize it ?
Had a similar thing with a cocker and the only way to stop further damage was amputation - hopefully you wont need to go down that route

Alum powder we used to use it on the lurchers stoppers hardens them up
Could be used on tip of tail dry it up
Iodine crystals mite work

I have a Lab that is due to the vets on Monday to have the bone in her tail shortened and the skin stitched back. In the winter while working the tip of her tail bleeds and is a mess. Was quoted £1500- £500 for the op. Best dog I have ever had for all round stalking beating and picking up. No problem paying for her to be right.

Have you tried blue spray? One of my springers rip her tail open, blue spray worked well, keep applying until it drys up nicely

Nightmare!
Pipe lagging is better than a syringe but the real problem is that damn wagging!
Pretty much nothing will really work and most vets have tried every thing. Being a lab, there will at least be some skin there so if it can avoid hitting objects for a week that might settle. I'd suggest ridiculously long walks so he's knackered and non one, but no one is allowed any form of snack for a week so he doesn't come running for scraps!

Aluminium spray also worked with mine, given to me by a friend who has a pack of dogs for boars, after weeks trying to heal an ugly wound

My GR had some of her tail amputated. In true dog fashion it was all healing nicely until she decided to shred her dressing and get a real nasty infection in the stump. We tried everything to protect it and keep her off it. In the end I fashioned a bit of plastic plumbers pipe held on with kidnap tape (away from the tip). She didn’t like it one bit, but it held. Even the vet was impressed. We bathed it in mild antiseptic daily and sprayed the silver animal antiseptic spray you get for livestock on to it (bought at Mole Valley).

Put the tip of it tail down in to a 500ml fizzy drink bottle, put a soft dressing between the pressure points where bottle meets tail. Review every day. The bottle should protect it from splitting. It’s a disaster when it happen, especially when they’re a happy dog
