Deer legal 243 80gr Factory Copper Rounds

Running 80 gr Barnes TTSX out of my shortened 20” Sako 75 .243 and achieving deer legal energy levels with my old IM4895.

there needs to be more tolerance worked into things , i suspected this would happen and put a new 6.5 barrel on my 243 . Factory ammo rarely meets what is says on the box as all barrels are different even at the same length

I think the 6.5s are much more tolerant than the 243, the 7mm even more so. My view on the 243 is that it always has been and always will be pretty fussy on ammunition - its high velocity, high pressure and over bore. When it works it works well, but it doesn’t take much to throw it off. By contrast my 7x57 - doesn’t matter - a case full of powder - doesn’t matter which, indeed suspect sweepings of the floor of a powder factory add a bullet and it will go close enough to point of aim that its a dead deer.

Take this a step further, black powder muzzle loaders shoot well enough despite all the variability in their loads, but pressure and stresses are very much lower.

Go the other way and the ultra high velocity centre fire 22s have a reputation for being ultra fussy.

My current 260 was built from a sako 75 ( an early one) i owned for many years i really still like 243 a lot As does most nations . A lot of my stalking mates still use them , tbf if we could just walk in and buy another rifle I think most deersalkers would add one . Heck i mostly shoot deer with a 100 grain copper bullet with the 260 from Muntjac up to the big reds. I had a 7-08 a good while before folks here got into them a Tika 595? Stainless with laminate grey stock, i would have kept it but 140? bullets or big heavy stuff made for 7 rem mag likely
