An old gent on the Mendip Hills accosted some lads from Bristol on his ground at night with dogs and lamps (this was about 16 years ago) they beat the poor fellow to a pulp and threatened him with a machete. Apparently one of them was laughing and taking photos on his phone (before the days of everyone having a smartphone with video).
The police were desperate to get the phone because it would not only help convict for the original offence but their hunch was that there would be evidence of many other crimes on it.
I'm not sure what happened after that although there was a conviction for the beating
It is a good result the three convicted were a menace around my neck of the wood our poaching incidents were at one point almost a nightly occurrence starting in the middle of summer where they were believed to be training young dogs catching red calf’s no more than five or six weeks old cutting there throats and leaving them in the field they were they were also suspected of lots of other rural crimes quad bike thefts etc and I personally caught them lamping deer and the conversation wasn’t pleasant despite the phone evidence there was a lot of police work that went into these convictions and since they were charged poaching incidents have been almost non existent so no matter what anyone says it’s a good result
