Deerstalking Fair, 23/24 March 2013

tell you what I discovered from meeting some of the members I did get the chance to speak to. They are often very different in real life than the perception you get on here. I don't mean looks, I mean the demeanor, or manner. Just goes to show that things are often lost in translation and the written word. Once or twice when asked 'are you jamross?' I found myself ready to duck when saying I was...

(Widows Son, that is not just directed at you mate!!! Lol. Good to catch up with you for the 10 mins we got at the door)

Brian,
I thought you were a decent guy till I met you and then realised on Saturday you were a complete cock.:D

Ok, we ended up next to a strange crowd - some grumpy tubby bloke obsessed with tea and selling car stickers, a 14 year old who just played on his Nintendo all day and seemed hell bent on setting up a webcam to capture the back of my head and a very nice lady who was just too free with cakes, biscuits and mainline sugar for anyone's good ;), but worked well.

It was a pleasure being 'stand neighbours' Andy :D

You better hope the night footage from the above webcam never makes it onto Youtube.... or should that be Xtube....

Funny that Nelly, I though exactly the same about you! Lol...

Brian,

I think next year you'll need to organise some sort of legal shooting competition. there's far too much big talk on shooting ability going on here that needs to be substantiated onto paper..shooters will be wearing their SD usernames on their badges:-D...it might also help avoid a few drunken brawls behind the beer tent! ...I'm assuming we'll have weather above -25 deg C. LOL..

Brian,

Been back home a few hours, got the car unpacked, had dram, put some stuff away, had a dram, so thought I had better put something on here before I have a dram.

Congratulations mate, a truly spectacular show. I had a great time and I know Alex did, even my good lady enjoyed herself :-D. It was pitched exactly right, to suit stalkers and their needs, there are plenty of other fairs on that cater to the candy floss and flower arranging brigade, but thankfully now that we have a stalking fair I have no need to attend them. I think you and Steve did a cracking job and cannot be thanked enough, we had a very enjoyable time, despite out porky neighbour ( him with the power band and well known glasses), and look forward to next year.

It was great to meet up with the SD members that came and introduced themselves and get the craic, we were a bit disappointed that more did not do so but never mind. The raffle was fantastic, I am disappointed that my attempt to turn £20 into a pair of binoculars or a jacket did not work, but there is always next year.

So once again thanks for an excellent event, it's future must surely be secure now and please do not change a thing, unless of course it is to do with stalking :-D

And the cake and biccies were a great touch!. Thanks John. :-D

Rather than a fresh thread, thought as well put here.

Only real down for me is I can only comment as a trader - I was too busy to get chance to have a proper wander about! That's our fault on the staff side - that, and someone having to keep an eye on Colin of One Less Charlie :D

As 6P mentioned above ( we're agreeing again David! ) it was something of a leap of faith - as it turned out it was overall an excellent event. That was in no small part to the huge effort made by Brian, Steve and their team. It was a first , certainly for them and in many other ways. Much has been learned I'm sure, but the result was fantastic. It was, bar absolutely none, ( for a trader ) the most relaxed, well organised, friendly and open event we've ever attended. I hope that trader atmosphere can be sustained - because it made a very welcome difference. It worked and I'm hugely pleased for B & S; but even if things had gone awry, I know we and I suspect many of the other traders would still have been happy to put something into stalking by demonstrating that faith.

As usual, fairs end up so hectic that you never have chance to give people the full time they deserve, get round and just chat or say hello properly to friends old and new. So apologies here and now to David - we got close several times, but never got chance for that chat - and to the dozens who came by and often got a blank, confused or wrong track look; and occassionally all three at the same time! Particularly sorry I didnt get chance for a proper chat with the Monarch guys.

The burgers were fantastic.

The layout worked well and I really liked the effort that the organisers put into the setting out. It was also good to be able to pull funny faces at poor old Paul Innes of Swaro on Gregors stand everytime he's trying to demonstrate spotting scopes. Best of all was watching Jon Snowden 'in action' - though time lapse photography would have been better :D.

I must single out in particular the very nice lady who said - ' Are you the guy off the Shooting Show'? Having been subject to, frankly, a barrage of 'Power Band' ( sorry Jayb, Powa Barnd ) heckling from that tubby old bloke; I was feeling emotionally fragile by this point. 'How did you know' I responded as I ruefully pat the ( greatly expanded by SD stand said sugary confections and the excellent burgers ) midrift. Her response made my year - ' I recognise your glasses' she said in beaming honesty! Madam, I thank you :tiphat:

As soon as I figure out where I packed the camera, I'll try to post some pictures. Though under the provisions of Section 15 (b) of the Official Secrets Act 1949 Schedule D, the night shots of Mike Norris in DPM jimjams and My Little Pony Slippers cannot be broadcast...

Brian, Steve - you brought together something different and very good. I hope you will try again next year and we would be happy to attend.

Just keep the burgers the same! - did I mention how good they were?

Got a Bore Guide for my Howa from you on Saturday - good to meet you ;)

TS - a pleasure :tiphat:

Just seen The Shooting Show short segment on the fair in the news section, but quite good. And Brian came over extremely well - that was likely entirely due to the behind camera 'assistance' Jon Snowden and I were providing :D ( ps he claimed he never saw us.... )

Slightly off topic, but good section on Scott of Eilean Irmain on Skye - he is a great guy and theme came over quite well - despite Blaze Publishing editing! At least this time they explained the camera angle was completely different from the shot. I know Scott well - the shot would have been text book safe.

Alex

Luckily Colin had a proper bed to go to....

Ha
Soft Southern Welshman you see...... the only time I sleep on the floor is if I cant post bail :-D
You Sir made the weekend a pleasure and I am in your debt.... I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Firearms Dept of the Borders Police for pulling out all the stops and rushing through my temporary RFD... Dyfed Powys Police could learn some lessons.

Just spotted Glogin's gallery pictures of the fair - love the shot of Byron & Colin on our stand, not sure they will; but I do! :D

Will have a go at putting something into our gallery.

Hmm... It wasn't the lack of sugar that was burning me in that photo, but the start of 5 days of something nasty and viral that I'm only just shaking off...... Bloody good show though!!!!!
