Devastating news today!

I had a phone call this morning from my sister in law in Bristol to tell me that my older brother had passed away last night. Rene (My oldest brother) left this country to go to Australia to "make a better life for himself" back in 1966. He started working for the Victoria Railways and then after a few years he joined the Australian Army where he did a stint in Vietnam and got discharged on medical grounds after getting shot. Since then he had been treated for Skin Cancer and tragically lost his wife last year. At the beginning of this year he was diagnosed as having lung cancer and had to have a lung removed. Rene went into recovery and was doing quite well and was "dreaming" about going Opal hunting when he was fully recovered. Unfortunately he never got to look for those Opals as he passed away last night at his home in Brisbane. I just hope and pray that Rene is in a better place now!
This is the third member of my family I have lost to cancer - My Mother died of cancer some 20 years ago, my older brother (Mick) had to have a lung removed because of lung cancer (Micj is thankfully fine now) and my younger brother died of Bowel Cancer two years ago. To add to that my younger sister had to have treatment for Lymphnode Lukemia (sp) at the beginning of this year - Fortunately Patricia has responded very well to the treatment and is quite well now but it was touch and go for a while and we were advised to expect the worst!
I also had a major scare about ten years ago when I was told (At Blackburn Royal Hospital) that it was suspected that I had lung cancer and was even introduced to a MacMillian Cancer Nurse and told that he would be with me for as long as necessary - Fortunately it was a false alarm.
It rally does seem that this bloody cancer thing is running in the family and to say that I am devastated is an understatement!

Sorry to put this on you guys but I needed to let it out!

Cancer is an awful thing. I have lost family and thankfully had others recovered from it. But it doesn’t seem to discriminate, you have my sympathy.
I once brought up familial links to it with my Doctor she downplayed it. Though it doesn’t stop it nagging at the back of the mind. Hopefully you can find some peace in venting.

Always upsetting to lose a family member.

It it obvious that your brother Rene, had had a long and interesting life. There is comfort to be found in that.

It is a sad truth, that as the population lives to an older and older age, then most of us will die of some form of cancer, or know someone who has.

Celebrate his long life, shared as it was, with a devoted wife.

My heart felt condolences to you and all your family. Cancer is a terrible disease that I hope one day will be beaten for good. Every family in this land has been touched by it at sometime or another.
