Not wanting to stir things and going off topic here.
But elmer did u see them hunting with 22 hounds? Or have u only the police's word for it? Who told them? Can they be trusted. Just all seems a bit strange.
Sort of depends where this was if they were breaking the law or not, would be perfectly legal in scotland until the lurcher was slipped even if it was on a fox it would be illegal.

Althou the FC don't want foxes shot on there ground anymore and in scotland no/little shotgun shooting on there ground either

Decent hounds won't bother the deer and the deer will come back fairly quickly as everyone else has said

The F.C only have the timber rights with permitted access only for timber related activities.

The farm kept all the sporting rights including vermin/pests etc.

This was the second time on two consecutive years that they had targeted deer with dogs so makes you wonder just how many times they had had deer when they were only allowed to shoot fox. The report to the Police came about when they were found to be trespassing in a neighbours wood and she called them. I have no problem with fox drives but when they go the wrong side of the law then its time for them to stop. When I asked about them chasing deer they said it was impossible to control so many hounds and they were not responsible for others who had brought lurchers to catch any fox that may slip by the guns. When asked about the two dog rule they again said the wood was difficult to work with only 2 hounds,
They were all very lucky as the F.C wanted all their guns, vehicles etc seized and taken to court but as they had a permit from the F.C they backed off. If the sergeant was a bit more switched on he could have had them for using more than 2 dogs to flush to guns, coursing deer and also armed trespass in the neighbours wood.

Decent hounds should not bother deer, seen packs move herds of 50-100 fallow out off woods and never even give them a 2nd glance, same as with stock. Depends on having a decent huntsman.
The pack i occasionally go out with think nothing of putting 2-3 couple into woods 3-4 thousand acres, big problem is covering it with guns/rifles, not saying they draw every inch but surprising wot they find

Good job I don't shoot on your land then I wouldn't last long then my farmers are friends too and I call them worse than plonker.It is called banter perhaps it doesn't exist in Sweden.

Guys, hunts should be allowed access to land as well, on the assumption they are within the law! Plenty of land I stalk is hunted, as is the phesant shoot I run, and tbh it has never been an issue. Good relations with the huntsman is key, make sure you arnt going to the same places. If they are withing the law this shouldn't be a problem as they should pre plan any routes. Hunts have a hard time, with the wet winters, getting access and I personally wouldn't want to drive anymore nails into the coffin.

I will be honest and fully admit that I am a hobby stalker and only that, I make no bones about it whatsoever. However it has become politically correct in this country to mention "deer management" rather than deer stalking these days, it's the modern buzz word.
A think perhaps a lot of folk have become defensive and a little obsessed with not upsetting the apple cart rather than admitting that they simply enjoy stalking and shooting. Unfortunately old friend some of us will never been seen as being politically correct and using the "correct" modern terminology when explaining (not justifying) our sport, or should that be lifestyle.
Makes me seriously think about doing as you did and moving to another country where people still think the right way.

Good job I don't shoot on your land then I wouldn't last long then my farmers are friends too and I call them worse than plonker.It is called banter perhaps it doesn't exist in Sweden.

Not a pop necessarily at the OP, but a mini-rant that more and more who get their DSC1 believes in a heartbeat, that they are deer managers. Not that i class myself as a deer manager either, but lets not kid each other that we are. Most of us go hunting as a hobby, as a recreational pastime. The amount of self professed experts i meet now, opposed to 15 years ago is immense. Oh, and just because you take people out stalking, doesn't mean you're a pro either. I've seen my fair share of nothing more than amateurs playing at being professionals.

Whether we are pros or novices (which I freely admit I am) we are all engaged in deer management. This forum can be a wonderfully generous and informative place but it can also be elitist and snobbish. The OP did not pretend to be a deer manager and did not deserve to be ridiculed by some bloke sat safely behind a computer who doesn't know anything about him. It is unnecessary and unpleasant. Whether he was making a broader point about definitions or not is irrelevant, I would hope he is not as rude to people face to face so why on here?

I think there is a question of just having to live and let live on this one. With most land there are lots of different activities going on. on my piece of ground there is a DIY horse livery and in the summer the horsey ladies are supposed to finish by 9pm. On more than one occasion at 10.30 they have been attending to dobbin etc and spolit a stalk. I just bite my tongue wish them a good evening and go back when they finish - there is often a deer out.

Deer, along with most wildlife, very quickly get used to people / shoots etc and dont move very far. Whether your buck is there on Nov 1st or not is more down to chance or whether he feelslike being there than if he has been spooked by the hunt.

I have found that deer in very remote locations are much more difficult to stalk, because they are not used to the sound and smell of man.

Tom, i suppose it goes to the whole thing about not being able to gauge what tone a statement is made when its via email or writing. It could have been meant either way i suppose, and i hope the OP doesn't feel victimised by my ranty post either, it wasnt aimed at him.

re: the original question, in my limited fallow experience, one off disturbances tend to have little or no effect, but i see that regular pheasant shooting does move them into areas where they don't get disturbed as much..

Tongue in cheek is very much hit and miss in the ether , try to treat it the same as it would be in the pub/bar, if you can give & take the banter / craic in the after stalk meets, you will do OK.

Never ever met anyone who claimed to be a deer manager here in Sweden and i do work my dogs for several pro gamekeepers who have red ,fallow ,roe and boar, one even has mufflon as well on there ground. I dislike it when people use the words Disaster, terrible awfull, ect when inconvenient would be a better word. Deer managers are as rare as hens teeth but its something used more and more on SD in one thread someone manageing fallow on 250 acres, Please.
Another thread with some one manageing boar, again., spare me the bull. In my mind it would be better for a novice to try a tried and tested deer hunting method called stalking and learn about the ways of fallow and refering to the other thread re boar they could spend a bit of time studying the habits of boar.

I to like a bit of banter with land owners I'm one myself but if i found out that someone had shown me disrespect on a open forum they would not be coming back.
I have people from SD come and hunt with me several times a year and i'm sure they will tell you what a nice chap i am but i don't take sh!t or prisoners and am even less tollerant of bullsh!t.

I do have a freezer groaning under the weight of game meat. so if the farmer in question is so down in the dumps about not getting his leg of venison then i will be happy to drop one in the post to him. I'll even chuck in a few kilos of scragend of boar. I seem to have a lot of that as well.

Now I'm going to eat a nice roe deer stew i've got on the go.
