Discovery 4

Now I’m not getting a pick up, for spade reasons, a discovery 4 has caught my eye. 2016 - a bit more luxury than the duster, and a lot more space.
Better for our annual family trip to the highlands as well.
Would love to hear actual experience, good or bad, I know the reputation of land rovers but I think these are the better ones.

I’ve had an early one for over 9 years & absolutely love it, loads of room & tows beautifully. Don’t buy one if you’re worried about fuel economy or running costs - when they go wrong they can cost a small fortune. Look for one that has got a full service history with services carried annually or at mileage whichever is sooner & with a folder full of paperwork that shows it’s been properly looked after. If it’s got odd tyres, or Chinese cheap rubbish, has a history of MOT fails for silly things that could be prevented with one eye on wear & tear, then avoid it - they’re not a car to run on a shoe string!

I have a friend who had a 2016 & he had a lot of problems with the ad-blue injection on his, so much so that he part exchanged it for a Lexus. I have a feeling that he tended to use it for relatively short runs which may have contributed to the issues he had.

I look after a fair few D4s if they are serviced correctly you should not have many problems I don’t use the 20,000 miles oil change we change it around 10,000 ,prop shaft centre bearing support rubber can fail but you can replace the full prop for around £200 ,rear brake pipes are prone to corrosion, timing belts at 7 years or107,000 miles ,door latches can fail we have changed a couple ,the gear selection knob can fail I suspect a couple I’ve change have had drinks spilled in them it’s not the end of the world if it fails they retail at £400

Very helpful thanks folks

This one has done 130k so I’ll be checking the big service is done. One owner and seemingly well maintained but more investigating to do. Good call to check mot history thanks

Wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. Cranks made out of chocolate, causing catastrophic damage when they snap. Told a mate not to get one, he spent 2k on warranty and is now on the 6th engine in maybe 5 years?

Had one for a few years & loved it, only got rid of it cos I got fed up with trying to load kayaks onto it - went for something lower & easier to do that with
One of the most comfortable wagons I've ever owned/driven, surprisingly fast off the mark for such a big/heavy motor,
Enough space in the back, with the rear seats folded down, to comfortably carry a few deer - I easily got reds into the back when I needed to (not too many of them though, just a couple)
Got me into some seriously tight spots and, a little surprisingly at first, safely back out again. It was a surprisingly capable off-roader even though it didn't have locking diffs, just the traction control.
I took the factory-fitted slicks off it and put Cooper AT's on it, made it a different vehicle all together, in a good way

Downsides, including but not limited to:
Thirsty - the oft-claimed 30mpg is mythical and feck that big tank cost a fortune to fill
Expensive to service and you MUST keep it serviced, it's inviting disaster not to
Parts are ridiculously expensive
So is insurance

You have been warned

Mine snapped it crankshaft between 5 and 6. Common fault because they used a cast crank that wasn’t man enough. Needed a total engine rebuild which was more than the value of the vehicle
Also the air suspension can be very problematic, although mine was ok.

Have a 2016 D4 put 150K+ on it still going great. I keep it as my dedicated shoot/stalking waggon plenty of power on the motorway, great off road capability, I put AT3’s on 18 months ago that’s improved it further. I get mine serviced by ex LR guy every year, cam belt changed at 105K, new prop shaft last year, great bit of kit

I have a MY2016 D4 from new.

Now on 154k - inlet manifold, rear prop, alternator and air compressor have been replaced.

Now on its 3rd set of AT3’S. now get around 55k miles from them.

It is best the Discovery I have owned

Sounds not bad. I have to ask, is it the only discovery you have owned? Like I say to my son he’s my favourite son 😂

I have had the following discoverys:

200 TDI
3.9i V8
TD5
D3
D4 MY2011
D4 my2016

So a few…….
Last one is the smoothest, quietest, most comfortable……

I haven’t got one, but have read extensively about the issues. Namely the crank as I was considering a Landrover.
So, as has been said. Ignore the 20,000 miles out of service. You want one that has been serviced annually or at most, every 10,000 miles. That helps a lot. Personally, I would service it every 6,000 miles. Do this and it reduces the crankshaft going bang.
I entered up with a Freelander, and that has been brilliant, but not as large unfortunately..

I did look at the Disco D4. Really liked it but reputation and fuel made me look elsewhere.

I have a Mk2 Touareg and love it. Not as big as the D4 but it tows very well and with the right tyres will go most places. I have the Escape with a low range box. I like this, but most just have the straight 8 speed box. To be honest you don’t the low range. 1st gear with the fluid flywheel allows you to crawl at slow speed and 3litre v6 has great big slugs of torque. And I get 36mpg if I don’t rag it.

i had a new D4 2016 graphite. i absolutely adored it and it was such a good design.

only sold it when the warranty ran out because i was too nervous to hang on to it.

I have have a 2016 D4 and love mine, it literally does everything you want it to and is so comfortable…..👍🏻

Bought one and the crank snapped within 50 miles of it driving off the forecourt! Got a new engine on warranty, was trouble free after that and so comfy!

Had a D4 for 4 years before I constantly had people trying to nick it - had to sell it.

Before that had a D3 for 7 years.

Apart from an air suspension leg go, never had any drama as I serviced them annually.

Simply amazing machines.
