Dmax or Hilux

Anyone got a Dmax V Cross as am concerned about the 1.9 engine size.

Cannot decide between a Hilux invincible X 2.8 or the Dmax V cross. Both under 2 years old and about 20,000 miles. Similar money.

95% Road use, 5% off road.
Occasional long journeys to Europe.
Not likely to tow.

Thanks

I have the D-Max with the smaller (1.9) engine. Very pleased with it.
It tows just as well as any other vehicle I've had, in excess of the stated limit of 3.5 tonnes.
It's a bit "utility" compared to the few L200s that I had previously, but it's a work truck not a car so that's a plus point, not a minus.

I haven't got much experience of the Hilux to compare with it. Last time I drove one of those was about 35 years ago and I jolly nearly came a cropper.

Friend has a 1.9 d max. It's fine untill you need to tow with it. Quiet and less agri than the last one.
Dad and brother have 3 Hilux between them. Dad had the older 2.4 dmax and changed it for a Hilux, much better chassis and engine is more refined, better suited to towing.
Dad's hard to please but really likes his new Hilux, it only the 2.4 base model tho.

I’ve a dmax 1.9. I use it for a 90 mile round trip on motorway/dual-carriageway A-road/B road/urban three days a week, and playing in rush hour traffic was a nightmare with regard to low end power delivery - until I had the power pack (approved remap) stuck on it.

It’s altogether different now, and I would recommend it. Fuel economy improved too and returns 32.5mpg with the auto box. Not sure about longevity, it’s a small engine in a big vehicle but that’s a problem for future owners as I won’t have it that long.

Hope that helps?

I have the new D-MAX V-cross manual which is now 3 years old, it replaced the Hilux 3L invincible manual which I had for 7 years , love both , the Isuzu has more toys and better fuel consumption 35mpg and goes into the ulez zones without penalty and better lookingIMG_0268.webp

We have 2,a dmax and a vcross (same engines) I got them mapped with the Isuzu program and that helped them a lot. We get 34/37 mpg on a good run, brings it up to the same power as a 2.8 I’m told.

My mate has the 2.8 Hilux and his son has a Dmax V cross. Both a year old and both very nice to be in with the Dmax having a lot more tech as standard and a lot more frugal on fuel.
Personally I think the Dmax is the better as a daily driver but long term the Hilux if really a similar price would hold it’s value over the Dmax

I have the 2.5 Isuzu and it is really good on fuel compared to a friends HiLux
I think the fact you can get an Isuzu-approved remap, shows even they think the 1.9 is underpowered!!

Dmax V Cross

Yes. I bought a DMax V-Cross new last year to replace my new-from-2016 Hilux.

I am very happy with DMax V-Cross and would tip it as a better drive than the Hilux. The Isuzu 1.9l engine with factory-fitted power pack is the beating of my previous 2016 Hilux 2.5l in torque, acceleration, smoothness.

Ground clearance seems a little less with DMax. And all later DMax have some nanny-state tech you cannot turn off permanently: satellite tracking, gsm phone plumbed in, emergency bracking and lane-departure that are both fooled by Devon country lanes.
