DNT 635R?

Thermnight 635?

Yes have one and really like it - base mag of x1.5 on the 640 resolution thermal makes the field of view enormous to clearly see everything approaching either side of a ride. Brilliant for woodland fallow & muntjac from legal time when the woods are still dark.

Being multispectral the best bit is the interchangeable Picture in Picture - with HD digital as the main screen (think it’s 4k as it’s way better than my 2k digital Habroks) and thermal in the small window takes all the faff away of locating an identified heat source in cover. Being able to flick between thermal and digital full screen easily is very useful to spot branches/shrubbage in the way.

Zoom is done using a traditional ocular wheel and comes with a small throw lever - I have it set that both screens zoom at the same time, but think there are lots of options.

Having moved from an Alpex 4k, the last light (with no IR) capability is good but not as good as the Alpex - probably 10 mins in it due to the smaller lense. Was out foxing the other night - NV picture with the standard IR is good to c100m - has a side mounted rail if you wanted to add a laser.

Comes with a mounting rail for picatinny, but I use an Innomount (believe it’s for the later Pard NV008P) so I can swap with my Zeiss HT depending on what I’m doing.

Comes with two 21700 batteries (one is a spare) but the battery lasts for ages.

I’ve input my ballistic data, but never used it yet - very easy to use though - quick press and it pings the range and marks a new holdover point on the reticule.

My only small gripes are:
* weighty, but no were near Alpex 4k heavy
* eyepiece rubber is really stiff
* not sure if it’s been remedied on the recent update, but the shot recoil recorded function has never worked.

All in all I really like it, it’s feels well made, with decent picture quality and is very easy to use, however I would suggest that it is for close range work (sub 100m) - it’s not an open ground foxing unit - maybe the Thermnight C650 coming soon might be.

Don’t have a Utube account so will ask @Tim243 to kindly upload some videos (note like all videos, quality is lost from the unit when downloaded - prob 20% better at the time on the unit)

Hi Fish Boy,
That’s a comprehensive write up.
I think you’ve answered the main thing that I had no idea about but worried me and that is deciding it’s at its best as a sub 100 metre unit.
I’ll pass on these.
Thanks very much, Ken.

Hi,
I agree with all the above, but with my 335R. Couldn't justify the extra £700 for the 635.
I don't go with the sub 100m comment though, or am I missing something?

Earlier in August I shot this fallow spiker at 234m, no illumination at dusk, too dark for an optical scope (and my binoculars). The view through the unit at the time was better than recorded here.
The deer dropped just after the video ended.
My only gripe is the auto record function, it works only intermittently. Other comments have been that it's not sensitive enough to activate with light recoil, but it's mounted on my .308...
I only use the thermal as a spotter, relying on the digital to identify and aim with. Perfect for my needs.

Think I should have been clearer and said that the 100m referred to the thermal due to the low base mag.

As you demonstrate, using the digital channel, far greater distances can be achieved. 👍

I love mine. Would I buy again.....?.... No, I'd go for the 335R as the thermal unit I use in PIP to get on to the target faster, so didn't really need the 635 higher thermal capability. But it's a great unit.

A few of us have them and have shot foxes at night out to 280 yards with clear visibility (on digital night mode) and no need for a further IR.

Overall, they're a fantastic unit.

Do you have to zero the thermal and the digital separately?

Does the range finder reticle still appear offset to the zero cross hair?

Thanks

Yes both have to be zeroed independently.

Yes small left and down at 7.30 on a clock.

How come the thermal didn’t pick broc up? its was only 74yds and visible with NV.

You could at the time, but with the download loss of quality and the PIP being so small on the video, admittedly it’s hard to see. Unfortunately it was gone when I switched to full thermal screen at the end.

Hadn’t used it all summer, so was just having a play around to familiarise myself with the layout.

It was 25 deg that night, cooling from 30, so probably not the best night for it.

I've a video that shows me shooting a fox at 92 yards on night mode and thermal in small screen. When zoomed in the thermal is very clear, but i can't upload it here as it says the file is too big. I have no idea how to reduce it's size though sorry.

But the thermal is a very good unit and very clear on the 635.

I second that. With an attached LL Wraith IR torch Foxes at 275yds are shootable using the digital. The thermal is too pixelated once you zoom in and it's greater than 100yds, OK for deer but iffy on small stuff. I'm sticking with the 335. I have to say though that the Zulus 5-20 gives a clearer sharper digital image.

With the 635 I'd be comfortable shooting on thermal way beyond 100yards but choose to use the night mode instead for the extra detail. I also find the IR built into the Thermnight is more than adequate enough to shoot at any distance I'm comfortable to shoot at at night, 300 yards or so.

I’ve had a go with one a couple of times and they aren’t for me, like you say the image size is tiny in the PIP box, that badger at 70 odd yds should stand out vividly at that distance.
All seems like hard work to me, 2 lenses to focus, poorer image than the Zulus and all that button twiddling etc.
Each to their own of course.

Tiny on a downloaded video, not while in use.

Believe it has the same electronics and lenses as the Zulus. 👍

Great little unit.
