Docter Scopes

Thinking about switching a S&B 1.25-4x24 to a Docter v6 1-6x24. The S&B is a First Focal Plane and whilst optically v good, I need it on 2x to not loose the reticle.

The Docter v6 is a 2nd FP with a red dot as well. It will double duty as expect it will also replace the existing 6x42.

Howdo Docter compare to the big 3 brands. They are certainly much better value.

Inside of my doctor scope appears to be cleaned with a dirty rag, that said it holds zero very well through all the bumps and knocks given. Only a change in ammunition usually requiring a re-zero. Not as clear as a swaro but nowhere near the cost. Very good value

P - Leica er5 1.5-8x32?, no red dot though
Ed can get them ;-)

A possibiliity - did nt know they existed. I have claw rings for 30mm straight tubed scope. And need to check but the 1.5-6x42 do not have the very wide field of view of the x24 - 25m vs 35 at 100m. And it’s for driven game so want the wide field of view.

Had a 6x42 Docter many years ago (21) and found it to be optically the same as the Zeiss I replaced it with, but it had woefully poor adjustment range, it was fine on my Mod 70 Winchester but when I put it on a Mauser Titan I couldn't bring the reticle down to within 4" of zero. Back then they were making a big thing of them being made in the Zeiss Jena factory in the East, not so sure where they're made now, but I'd suspect that they have modernised the old factory

I was in their factory in Germany late last year. Very modern setup. They mill/turn the scope tubes right through to assembly. We were not allowed in the clean room assembly line but could look in from outside. A lot of attention to detail it seems. Recon that is how it must be. They are not a big set-up. My guess is there are about 20-30 working on the scope side of things.

I bought a Docter 8x56 with illuminated red dot reticle last year (pre-owned).

I've had S&B, Swaro, Zeiss as well as other cheaper brands. Glass (to my eyes) was best with swaro, closely followed by top end zeiss. S&B a wee bit behind both. That's just my eyes folks - don't take it all personal :D

I'd put the docter a bit above the S&B and not quite up there with swaro and top end zeiss, again just my eyes and the scopes I've tried!

Red dot is also really fine point, very clear but doesn't obscure too much of the thing you are trying to put a bullet through.

Would I buy another? Definitely. Great value scopes!

Well I have just bought a Doctor V6 1-6x24 and first impressions very pleased with it. It's a 2nd focal plane so the reticle stays the same size regardless of whether its on 1 or 6x - prefer this to 1st focal plane. Cross hair is quite fine, but has a red dot. Image quality is superb and was comparing it alongside my 4-12x50 Swaro - OK in the dark the swaro is brighter a 6 or 8x, whereas with the Doctor I have to turn it down to 3x, but would still be able to put a Boar on the deck shooting under the moon provided the boar was silhouted against a lighter background. And in the woods and on driven the 1x is very wide and able to use both eyes open.

It's going on my combination gun / double rifle. I currently have a 6x42 Zeiss and a 1.25-4x20 S&B - both in claw mounts - the latter with 30mm rings so this is a straight swap. I expect this scope will replace both of them.
