Dog GPS Tracker Suggestions

I'm about to buy a very expensive dog.

I was thinking that attaching some kind of tracking device to the dog's collar might not be a bad idea. Maybe not yet, as it's only 8 weeks old, but in the near future I want to plan ahead for an escape artist, especially after seeing threads like this one.

My first thought was an Apple Airtag, which would be fine if I had an Apple phone I suppose. A bit of an Internet search turned up Cube GPS, but it appears to be US only. I see there are a plethora of tracking collars on the market, but I have no idea of their relative merits.

Of course the dog will be microchipped and should always have a collar on with identification details, but nonetheless a tracker seems like it could be handy.

Any suggestions or recommendations?

What dog is it?

Lagotto Romagnolo

Never had one before. It's somewhat of a compromise dog between what the rest of the family wants and a dog that can actually work. Still, after reading tonnes about them, I'm looking forward to it.

It's not just a Crufts knee-jerk reaction. We went to the Lagotto local breed show about 2 years ago, and have been patiently waiting for the right puppy from the right breeder. There was a queue even since then!

The breeder is the main truffle trainer in the country, and I like truffles.

This is Islay (official stud name is Suegiu Yla, but Islay works for me)....

PitPat tracker. They are about £150 comes with a SIM and no ongoing contract so not reliant on other people's phones to locate it like most tags (Apple and Samsung etc) plus it can record exercise, what your dog does when you're out etc. Seems to be the cheapest stand alone tracker and the app is very simple to use.

My friend has one of those, it’s a mean arsehoole! Bites, bad with kids! Eats things in the house, good luck 🤞

In my experience, the majority of people who have ‘bad’ dogs are themselves generally to blame.
There shall be some exceptions, as with everything, but some owners do not apply sufficient basic training or socialise their young dogs.
In such cases, its not fair to always blame the dog, when it’s actually the owner that’s at fault.

Hopefully we won’t end up with a bastard dog. We’ve been to the breeder’s already and the puppy seems well adjusted. The mother is friendly and calm. Having also been to a couple of local breed club events, we’ve not yet come across a complete nut of a dog, but of course it can happen.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. From what I’ve seen the majority of GPS trackers are quite bulky, not really the discreet size of an airtag. I’ll keep looking!

Have been recommended Tractive. Saw one of their devices today and it’s not too large.

Anyone tried this?

Hi Phill, I own a 13 month old Lagotto and have trained her from 8 weeks on both deer and truffle. Feel free to PM me with your number and I'm happy to chat about the working ability of the breed. It will be easier I'm sure for you to learn from my mistakes as opposed to your own! V best, James
