Domestic fridge advice

Hi All,

I’ve got a domestic fridge in the garage which I use as a chiller.
It’s stopped working in this really cold spell. I am aware that this can happen.
Is it likely that I’ve fried some important component in it or will it start to work again once it’s warmed up?
I appreciate it’s difficult to judge without seeing it, but if it’s a straightforward case of changing a part then I’ll crack on and order one. Otherwise, I’ll take it to the tip.

(I should add that I’ve checked the fuse and it’s fine)

My beer fridge kept in the outhouse hasn’t chipped in for the last week. The temp inside it wants to be at +5 but outside hasn’t been above +1. It’ll sort itself once it gets warmer later this week.

I’ve found that a couple of garage and shed domestic ones don’t chill so much when it’s chilly. A few bits of Celoex around it generally helps.

Just put a heater or two beside it, so that it'll work and chill the contents....

Seriously though, it probably will kick in when the temperature rises. If not, might be cheaper to get a second hand fridge than try to fix it. Worth checking that it's draining properly though. If that's bunged up, it'll stop working.

Thanks all - the fact the light isn’t turning on is making me wonder if it’s more than just feeling a bit chilly. We’ll see what happens as it warms up a bit.

the caravan fridges I’ve had do the same when it’s cold, the lights don’t turn on either.

You are correct, the light isn't on the same circuit as the chiller, but it could have blown a bulb. The reason your chiller doesn't work in the cold is that it has a capillary type thermostat and most of the capillary will be out in the ambient temp, all you do is insulate the part of the capillary that isn't inside the chiller. Where it runs a cross the top of the case before it goes into the chiller box. I hope that helps.
