Don't stay at Crown Woodbridge

loosehead, I think you might have a case, but it all depends on whether they have a cancellation policy at all, and what this is if they do. Three weeks' notice is plenty of time, and you should pursue this a bit further.

Do not start fighting with each other guys, no need for handbags at dawn.

RD, I am sure you would not be happy either if someone vented their frustration on one of your threads selling overpriced shotguns. Extend the same courtesy to a fellow stalker.

Until recently I have had many short breaks at Hotels/Pubs/B&Bs all over the country and in all cases the small print states that deposits are not refundable.
Sometimes refunds are made but normally only as a gesture of good will.
Once you have paid your deposit your accommodation is reserved for you so anybody else asking for rooms are turned down so if you cancel your deposit is kept as part/loss of income from either you or those turned down.

Lately I think twice before I buy or book anything. Generally the item bought doesnt work, not fit for purpose and is crap quality. When the point is raised with the "salesperson" they dont care. Let me give an example.... Recently bought some very expensive "waterproof" boots. On the first outing (45 minutes) they leaked. The shop contacted the importer and they said "when walking on wet/ boggy ground or walking through water/puddles some water ingress can be expected but you just walk them dry". Water ingress must be different from leaking. After some debate I go my money back but it just seems that once you buy something no one stands behind a product unless you are willing to amp up. Just my thoughts.

They say their cancellation policynis no refund, but that is not on their very basic online booking form. Nice to have someone talking sense. I put this up in case other stalkers might be looking for accommdation in the area, to avoid people being ripped off. If some on this forum are bored by this, then they should just butt out.

If you got through their online booking it says:

A credit or debit card is required to take a non-refundable £30 per person deposit to secure your reservation. If cancelled up to 2 days before your date of arrival, no additional fee will be charged. If cancelled later or in case of no-show, the total price of the reservation will be charged.

So did you lose £30 or some other amount?

I have dealt with the Crown on several occasions, personally and on the behalf of others. I have always found them to be pleasant to deal with, obliging and the customer service has been first rate.

I have always thought that a deposit was just that, a deposit that you gave to, in this case to book a room and if you don't show, they keep the deposit. If they give you your money back that is just a nice gesture. So if I pay a deposit and pull out, whatever the reason, I don't expect to get it back.

now as an aside I recently stayed with some friends in Wadebride who run a b&b and they told me you wouldn't believe the amount of people who suffered bereavement, usually parents or the amount of people who use a card that will expire before they turn up, and if the weather is rubbish they don't.

just to add to the story as I don't know either party involved here. :D

I once had a insurance company tell me, we had not had a flood but a "Ingres " of water and we were not covered.

Yet another defamation by SD. Losehead was 100% wrong to post this and has went quiet now that he has been proven to be so.
People work in that hotel and the owners are probably decent hard working bill payers then along comes Joe Public spitting dummies all over the internet just because he didn't read the rules....Who is the asshole now?

A salutary lesson I think from which all can benefit. It is probably best to be in possession of all the facts before denouncing someone on the internet. It would appear that the hotel were perfectly within their rights in refusing to return your deposit, the fault appears 6to lie with you as you seem not to have read the online terms and conditions.

Will you be making a public retraction with as much enthusiasm as your accusation?

John

If anybody uses these type of facilities often, then they would be expected to know the T&Cs, so, if as in this case, he felt affronted and put a defamatory entry on Trip Advisor then they have left themselves open to court action !
I would have thought tho, that anybody that is grown up enough to book such a facility would be aware of how such systems work even without reading the T&Cs
