Double cab pickup HMRC BIK Changes

I have always taken my truck home every night as sometimes I go straight to customers from home and also I am the alarm responder so would need a vehicle and it has never been classed as a company car. My accountant is normally pretty strict on most things, but has never questioned this!

Thing is its a pennant bun situation.
I used to own a peugeot bipper 15 years ago and paid the same band road tax as someone in a 2.5 greedy van, thing was the exact same vehicle was/is made with the same engine but has seats in the back and costed at the time £20 pa to tax.... tax based on emissions..... by arse.....

Don't know what you lot are wingeing & worrying about - just wait to pay per mile driving is intoduced - then you'll really have something to complain about...
The motorist is increasingly seen as an easy target for HMRC, what with the congestion charge, ULEZ & expanded ULEZ in London and similar schemes in other cities - IMO we must all do our best to resist these schemes or else car ownership will turn into something only the very wealthy can afford.
it already has

Is this down to too many people taking the **** and using their shiny new 4x4 off road vehicle to drop the kids off at school every day or just to drive to the office and back pretending it’s a work vehicle when it’s being used as a car?

That sounds like a nail being hit on the head.

It's down to an investigation that HMRC did on coca cola. They found double rows of seats in vans all listed as commercial. Given the size of the fleet, it was worth going to court over. HMRC won and that got them all classified as cars at the higher rate. They've now decided to roll that judgement out to any commercial vehicle that has a double row of seats.

Nothing to do with dropping the kids off, it's just HMRC will have their blood and pickups were last to have the court judgement applied. They were never going to get away with it

I doubt it, and anyway, who cares about that?
This is just another money grab. They realise that they can get millions more in the coffers by changing the rules.
Same as the 'emissions based tax' - all a load of bunk, the rules are twisted to suit.

Well they weren’t going to take Mrs smith to court for dropping the kids off were they?
The commercial vehicle status has been abused by all and sundry and Coca Cola were just the biggest target.

Exactly. Take the big one to court and get an overall judgement on the commercial category that can then be rolled out to Mrs Smith

Lots and lots of people are bothered about it actually.

Companies using a works vehicle ( with all the tax benefits) and then not using it as a works vehicle and using it as a car.
It’s tax avoidance at worst but it ****es a lot of people off as they have to buy a car from their own pocket and not have the taxman help provide one .

I don’t give a **** myself. If I could lessen the cost of running my Hilux I would , but I can’t set up a “ retired” company 😂

"Geriatric Transport Company" Limited by guarantee! :coat:

Huge numbers of pickups are being used as personal vehicles, but put through as a business expense either through a company or as self employed.

Large numbers of electric cars have also been put through in the same way. It’s why there are large numbers of high end electric vehicles on the roads. They are company owned and get a 100% tax write off.

Fundamentally I have no issue paying taxes. We all use public services, roads, police, hospitals etc etc. What irritates is the tax system is so bloody complicated and full of little loopholes that there are thousands of tax accounts and lawyers making a very good living out finding these loopholes abd its cheaper to pay an accountant to find these loopholes and save some tax.

In many cases it pays to live overseas in a tax haven.

Now imagine if we had a clear and transparent tax system that a give year old could understand so that there was no need for a huge HMRC and a huge “tax” industry. That would immediately several hundred thousand reasonably bright and intelligent individuals who could actually contribute something productive to the UK economy rather than fighting over money that has been earned by somebody’s else’s hard work.

The first line applies to me, I am a sole trader, I use my Hilux for personal and business, when I submit my tax return I only claim for the business miles as an expense, the bulk of the time my truck is used for personal use.

But I can see 2 things happening in the future, HMRC will now smack on a huge RFL increase as they will deem double cabs as 'cars', and polluting ones as well, and soon the market will be flooded with double cabs for sale, and the bottom will fall out of the market, but of course I might be completely wrong!

And I agree, no issues at all paying a fair tax.

You might find rfl goes down ( maybe)

I have a 3ltr diesel X5 that’s cheaper than commercial rates.

I am like you, I claim business mileage at HMRC’s rate of £0.45 per mile - which has been the same rate since cars were invented:)

But there are plenty who put the vehicle into the business, claim all the VAT, running, fuel and service costs in full on the business and have limited recharge for personal use. And they do this whether its a pick up or a car, or for that matter an electric car. But the put a small business logo so that’s their justification.

It’s this sort of behaviour that’s buggered it for the rest of us.

Go on then, how do you personally resist these schemes ?

Suits me, I can then buy mine in 2028 at rock bottom price for shooting use 😂

If you park at home but have a workplace then BIK is payable as commuting to an office is not work.
If you work from home as your place of work and commute to various customer sites then you have no tax to pay unless you and your employer agree to opt in for private use and therefore pay the BIK.
The insurance inspectors for example Zurich and Allianz have cars and all work from home as base. Opting out of private use is allowed as their employer specifically says (as they are the underwriters) that any unauthorised private use is also without insurance and gross misconduct. HMRC cannot argue this.
Speak to HMRC if you are being forced to opt in for the tax without being allowed to use it for personal benefit.
But if you don’t have a fixed workplace, like @Jh1986 then it’s not commuting and BIK doesn’t apply. From memory you have to be working at a location for 2 years for it to become commuting.

its just another way of wringing more money out of hard working people, and they have to find some money from somewhere to house and feed are lovely migrants , why dont they tax dinghy,s and car washes and barbers, i kid ye not there are 7 barber shops in about 50yds of each other near me ? bs
And they all drive BMW’s even though the seats in the shop are always empty 😂
