Driven Boar scope

Unfortunately it looks like Leupold has discontinued the VX-R line which doesn’t make sense to me at all. The only rationale I can come up with is Leupold is trying force customers to purchase one of their higher priced models if one wants a Leupold scope with an illuminated reticle.

I don’t hunt feral hogs in the driven manner and don’t know anyone who does it that way. I’ve seen videos of driven hog hunts in Europe and would like to do it sometime. I do hunt feral hogs though.

I have a VX-R 2-7x33 Firedot 4 on my AR-15. I like it a lot though I rarely use the rifle, but AR’s are quite popular for hog hunting in the U.S. I believe a VX-R would be an excellent scope for drive hunts from what I’ve seen, if they were still available.

I use a different rifle for hog hunting than deer hunting. For hogs I use a Marlin 336 with a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32 German #4. It was discontinued a couple of years ago which is sad. If Leupold continues this trend there literally won’t be scopes of theirs I’d want to buy in a year or two. The Swarovski and S&B scopes recommended above would be fantastic for the OP’s uses.

The criteria for a scope to be used on driven hunts are:

a) wide field of view
b) uncluttered reticle
c) easy running zoom ring

a) is achieved not only be low mag, but also by a small objective. All thing equal a 24mm objective will have a wider FOV than a 42mm objetive at a given magnification.
b) well, I guess everybody will have to make up his own mind on what he likes and if he needs an illuminated dot or not
c) hard to ckeck on the i-net, you'll have to handle the scope by yourself

I used this, brilliant for the price.
Used on one trip and sat back in its box since if anyone is interested.

The best advice you can be given IMHO is to try out a few different scopes side by side and see what you prefer and what suits you. For me and when driven shooting over ranges up to circa 100 yards I am best served with an Aimpoint and second best is a 1-6 or 1-8 x 24 variable scope set on 1 x magnification. With 1 x mag and the Aimpoint you can keep both eyes open which is an advantage and your eyes do not have to make adjustment to accommodate a slightly different sight when using 1.25 or 1.75 magnification. I recently did this exercise with a friend who bought a scope that went down to x 1.25, he had bought it after looking through it and thinking it was fine, that was until we put a 1x mag scope alongside for comparison and he found that acquiring a running target was quicker and easier with 1x mag. As for an illuminated reticle that would be down to your preference. I have used both a scope and Aimpoint on boar trips and for me the Aimpoint is the best but most of the boar I shoot are under 100yds in what are often very narrow rides. if I was going to hunt in open areas and at extended ranges where I would be taking more considered shots it would be my 1-6 x24.
