Drought in South Gloucestershire

in 1976, we had no rain at all from the first few days of April until the last day of August. The ground was so dry, the electric fence wouldn't give a shock.
Then on the last day of August, the driest August on record became the wettest.

South Kent is the same. No rain, and as we are also on clay soil its now as hard as a house brick. I managed to obtain a few more water barrels to catch run off from our house, last year. In total I have 9. They are almost empty now. It looks like the weather will change next week, hopefully some overnight rain.

Last nights walk. This was last years maize ground. Like broken uo concrete.

Making hay on one of my perms. The farmer who was 70 last week told me that he had never made hay in May. Good crop and drying very nicely. I didn't see a fox on the field the evening he mowed it. In fact devoid of all life.

I'm in cornwall and the land behind us must be two hundred acres of silage is devoid of any mammals. I've seen crows, jackdaws and song birds that's all. Not a rabbit, fox or deer since i left essex.

6mm this am. Spent all day in the garden yesterday. Ground rock hard and turned to dust. Lots of plants dying. I had to fill planting holes full of water prior to planting my sunflowers. I then had to use a bar to make a hole for the 8ft canes to support them

Prayers answered 11mm today so stored water capacity up to 80% .
No need to water for a couple of days I expect plant carnage tonight as all slugs and snails will be out in hoards.
