Electronic fox callers

Im lucky in the fact im retired so always get to my permission on sunset
its surprising the amount of foxes ive shot within the first 3/4 hour of being there.
i know i shouldn't do it but always follow the same routine.
i sit in one high seat for a couple of hours, then go and put my caller out in front of the other high seat before having a walk around the farm
working my way back to the high seat where i put the caller (route depends on wind direction)
i then sit up the high seat for 1/2-3/4 hour, before having a final walk/check

Bait them in, get a bag of cheap dog meal £8 for 10kg and spread it across a field where you have a safe backstop. Then spray the magic mix, horse hoof trimmings fermented in water in the green house for a few weeks, stinks to high heaven. Put it on a bit of material and hang it on the barbed wire near your bait, they can smell it from miles away come for a look and find the free meal. Do this for a few days, a trail camera helps but not needed, just check the baits going and top it up regularly then sit and wait when it suits you, has worked a few times now. A splash on the ground near the bait also helps. Don’t worry about all the vids on u-tube, not everyone shoots near large pheasant shoots which are a draw for foxes or battery hen/pig sheds etc. Some ground only holds a few foxes and if pickings are lean they will cover large distances to get a decent feed each night so they will appreciate your efforts.😜

Vixen on heat is working well here atm in west Yorkshire, (two dogs & one vixen in the last three day's) -------and i don't have many left to go at ?
As a first resort i will use the remote caller, they don't work all the time but they save a lot of time when they do, often pulling foxes off some one else's land, and seeing as its getting near genuine mating season your in with an extra chance of pulling them in with all the mating calls (which you can only do with an electronic caller)
Baiting does work but it can be quite time consuming but if your staying on one spot its worth doing.

Had 5 last night but only 2 to caller as other 3 spotted and stalked. 1 to dog fox mating call and 1 to Jack rabbit distress.

Any joy yet DB ?

Nice work mate, no joy yet but ill be out this week on new ground, was on the new ground on Fri night the farmer was looking rid of rabbits, I seen two foxes just observed and let them go for now I no they're there 🤞🤞

Do most folk tend to go out in the evenings with the caller? I've shot a lot of foxes at dawn or very early in the morning (usually as a result of being out stalking anyway) and wondering if the same calls are still as effective early doors? Can't imagine why not but wondering what others have found...

For the last ten or more years all my fox shooting was in mid-afternoon and so I had a lot of success at very social hours. Then I discovered Pard 007, Pard 008 and more recently the Axion Thermal Spotter. Now I am out at silly o’clock several times a week and having great fun seeing things I would not have seen in my usual daytime forays. Fox count is probably about the same but I love being able to see and shoot in pitch black - it really brings a whole new dimension to your shooting.

They work perfectly well early in the day. I often take mine out for an hour or so before pheasant feeding. Any of the distress calls work at this time. Well worth a try.

Foxes follow a routine, and a general route, at least that what I’ve found in my ground.
I get most foxes 4-5 hrs into dark, but it always tails off around midnight until 3-3:30 ish, no idea why but I would say 80% of my foxes are shot before midnight
Callers, I’m on the fence, some days they work and another day they can put them off, the next day they can be completely ignored.
I’ve seen foxes charge across 3 fields to get to the caller, I’ve seen them walk the hedge line in the same field and not even look in its direction.
Calls, that changes on an hourly basis as well 🤣 mouse can work well, as does mating calls and cub distress a little later in the yr.
I have a good number of poultry, yet chicken call has accounted for a grand total of…. Zero ! Go figure
I mix it up, I play a call for a few minutes and often sit and wait 30 minutes to see if anything moves, I work the caller more if I see something a field or two away.
I am starting to really like mouth calls again, always keep one in my pocket.

I’ve been hearing foxes calling for several weeks, the nights are getting colder, I think the season will be changing up a gear very shortly, that’s when the mating call will come into its own.
I also think you can overdo the use of a caller and it ends up been a deterrent, no scientific evidence, just my belief.
I also use trail cams and bait areas, this seems to work very well.

Strange that you have had nothing with the chicken in distress call as I have shot plenty. It's the call I often use last when nothing else has worked , played very loud.

Very odd considering I bait with chickens, have had chickens taken when they are stupid enough to sleep in the bottom of the hedge, always thought the chicken call would be dynamite but alas, i rarely bother with it now

This is why we love foxing its fascinating.
When I have been called out to a chicken killer this is the call of choice and invariably works.

Heard this Vixen calling in a field off to my left on Thursday night then a few minutes later popped up in my view, 40gr v-max stopped it short.
Weathers been awful since but hopefully Friday night will prove profitable.314D5948-3058-4AAA-9A5B-D2D0E187A701.webpCCC1068B-8B8D-4AF6-8A1D-9F374A1615FE.webp

im a bit confused
had a go with the VIXEN in heat call last night
i let it run a couple of cycles on full volume then turned it off
five minutes after a fox came bounding into the field i was in
Dog fox i thought after some action
anyway a nice head shot at 70 odd yards put it on the grass
when i walked down to pick it up, a quick look
it was a vixen
